So if it is split copper plating does it add value to the penny?

Agree with John (been agreeing with him all day!). No, there is no added value here.

Split plating is common and without value.

Thanks Crazybo for the information. I will read the books and anything else you recommend. So with all the different errors how does one know which errors make a coin more valuable?

Very spendable. The coin will be a copper colored Hersheys' kiss wrapper eventually. I've heard of someone that put one in acid and it sped the process up. (His coin had a hole drilled through the edge of the coin all the way through) Soon turned in to a copper glob.

When oxygen gets to the zinc beneath the plating, it starts to break down. Eventually in time, they will all deteriorate away. It is a progress of breakdown when the zinc gets exposed.
