I finally broke down and bought a coin from Great Southern Coins on ebay. They sell an enormous number of high-end coins and can't imagine where they get them all from. But, when I saw a 1924-S DDO-001 go up I figured I'd cherrypick it and if it would grade AU I'd send it off to upgrade mine.

Looking at the photos of their coins I always knew they were sprayed with something to make them look better. Fine, but I want to grade the thing and need to figure out either how to get it off the coin safely or whether ANACS would grade a sprayed coin.

Anyway, that's my question. What is the best thing to do with this sprayed coin in order to get ANACS to grade it? Also, anyone know exactly what they are spraying on coins? Seems kinda rude to do to all those expensive coins they sell.

I'd use acetone. Most likely a varnish was used, semi-common with older collections it seems.

Acetone will remove it pretty quick, and not effect the coin at all.

I know right? I hate it when sellers do this. I think they look worse with whatever they used to spray it. You can see the spots, where it got sprayed. I would try Acetone first and see it that helps.

Usually, Great Southern Coins sells polished/cleaned coins. A seller I would stay away from. This is a first for GSC (varnish) from what I've seen.

I would try to soak it in acetone and see if that helps.

Sounds like a consensus for acetone. I'll drop it in overnight and see what I have left in the morning. Not a super expensive coin, and still a nice DDO no matter how it comes out so no worries if it doesn't turn out perfect.
Rest in Peace

If not varnish, then a paste wax which should come off with a high astringent detergent as Wisk or other liquid clothes soap. Acetone may make it cake on and harder to get off, try detergent first. AND VERY HOT WATER!

Those marks might be on the coin?
Only open link on a computer. Too large for a phone.

This maybe the same die that struck that coin? I have a theory about these if they are incuse. But these look raised on the image I posted.
If they are incuse on the coin the die may have been rolling the edge metal of the die higher on the near the collar.
The they are raised the coin, then the metal may have been common off of the edge of the die. But I feel these are die related. Cleaning the coating off probably will not remove them.

I assume the marks are just Die Deterioration. They are raised and do not expect them to go away. Really just want the crud they put on the coin off it so it doesn't look like I pulled it out of on oil slick. It's definitely not wax so I went ahead and dunked it. Looks like it's clearing off already after just a few minutes. Don't know what the coin will look like afterwards, but gotta get the goo off or I'll never be happy with the thing.

Have you sent him feedback yet. "I'd mention how the coin was doctored. Buy beware!

No, I wanted to see what came of the coin after treatment first. But I will note in feedback that the coin was doctored, as that seems like the right thing to do.

@TB, here is an old CCF discussion about Great Southern that may be of potential interest: http://goccf.com/t/68896

Just wondering if you can call ANACS,or any of the TPG's and just ask what to do if anything before sending it in? Nice coin by the way.

Spence, that was an interesting thread. Seems like a lot of good folks make a point to stay away from them, which is telling. While a whole lot of someones out there pay over book for their coins every week.

From my end I would be in the stay away club, but when cherrypicking doubled dies I am far more lenient. I think my purchase of the 1924-S would have been a bad deal for a normal coin in that condition especially covered in goo. But for a DDO-001 in that condition that I have to treat somehow I am pretty sure I got my money's worth. My cost was $30 for the coin, and even if it is EF-45 that's a very good price for that doubled die in that condition.

So, what's it look like now? It's still a pretty nice grade but certainly doesn't have that shine anymore.

Nice looking for sure. I have yet to encounter a coin coated like this.
