Now that I have the Perpetual Set in my possession I'll get some pictures taken and post them here. The picture of me in this thread is a couple years old. Rachel

Okay, I've finally got the courage to show my face. They're a couple of years old. I'm warning you - any jokes and these photos go the way of the dodo! (Above) I was quite young when this photo was taken! (Above) Here, my son managed to spill his drink all over his shirt only minutes before the photo was taken.

No argument from me! Drop-dead gorgeous is how I would label our coin ladies, inside and out. I feel like a troll in the presence of goddesses.

Morgan Fred, you and scoutjim99 were right on target. It was 1966 and I think it is one of only three pictures taken of me in RVN. We use to carry a Leica Camera for Intelligence purposes as the Chicom was duplicating many of our munitions and we had to photograph everything we could before destroying the ordnance. That was an early version of the M-16, but we use to destroy these weapons by the hundreds, after engagements. If the enemy had any of these weapons in their possession they were not allowed to be re-issued to our troops. We use to rebuild our weapons from the many parts that we had from captured weapons and carried many spare parts in our vehicle. If I remember right they changed the bolt in the M-16 and virtually all of the jams magically went away, thank God. I was a Spec 6 and wore the EOD Badge. We use to get P.O'd as we were in the bush with all the bright rank insignia that we had to wear which could be seen from a long distance. One stupid thing (of many things) that we had to do was when we gyro'd to RVN, we had to take our old "winter greens" which after a few months of lugging around, mildewed and they then collected all the uniforms in RVN and disposed of them. Anyhow, I wanted the other people to know about another time and era before the Mid-east. I think today's troops are an outstanding bunch as were the troops during my era. Berry PS, If you look on the driver's side of the vehicle you will see an M-14, which we would never go to the field without. The "Elephant Gun" was a long shooting bearcat that could reach out 500 meters with no problem. The only problem was that it weighed a ton to carry around in the jungle.
Now I see the profile of the M-14 in the background. They were offcially leaving the inventory as the M-16 was issued in Nov 68 when I started Basic. I trained on the M-14, but we had familiarization in the M-16. The A-1 was also coming into the inventory with the new polished bolt and bolt assist assembly (little helper on the right side). When I arrived in-country in Nov 69, there were still quite a few early model M-16s including those with the open flash surpressor which was always getting brush stuck in it. By Nov 70, these had all been replaced and so was I by my turtle (replacement for the jargon non-speakers). Nevertheless, at least in my division (Americal = 23rd Inf Div), every infantry squad was required to carry an M-14 since it's 7.62 NATO bullet penetrated brush a lot better than the M-16's high velocity small calibre 5.56mm. I split the difference and got my hands on a Korean War vintage M-2 (automatic version) .30 carbine. I had very few pics taken of me in RVN and I don't believe I have more than one or two with me, but I'd have to rummage through my storage shed to find them, then scan and compress them before uploading. Think I'll wait until it gets a little cooler - it gets into the 120s inside my shed. Fred
