Supposedly, the $12.95 is supposed to buy you special, faster treatment before shipment as well but since in many cases that would conflict with the FIFO promise, it is only worth paying for when your order won't get the free upgrade and you want the (much) quicker shipping. Unfortunately, they do not tell us when they are going outside the $300 mark and giving us free upgrades other than by stating that all gold and platinum will get upgraded. Currently, the only time that the gold upgrade comes into play is for an order of a single 1/10th ounce proof Eagle. The bugger is that it is stated policy that if you give them the $12.95, and did not need to, they will not refund it.

Yep found that out, oh well it got here safe and sound, but in the future if I order something and it is close to $300
I will just choose regular shipping and hope it gets
upgraded....

I'll probably use NGC for my grading services, as it will be half what PCGS charges..if I am correct, that is roughly 120 for NGC, and, 210 for PCGS....thats about a 500 dollar difference in my pocket...

I'm never much for slabbed coins, but these will be slabbed. I have 5 sets coming in one box, but I'm not to familiar with TPGs. you said that each set will run $120 from NGC, but their site says $17/coin which comes to about $85/set?

Am I missing something here? Or am I misreading this comment?

Also, does anyone know how long it takes to get membership? I am not a member of any TPG at the moment.

since my orders are still on hold, I called us mint this morning, it turns out that because I'm a new customer, they need to confirm my shipping address, here is how they do it, they send me a letter through mail, after I receive the letter, I need to call them and read the content of the letter through phone, interesting... so there is still a week of anxious waiting

Regarding the cost of grading, here are my understanding for PCGS: These coins will go under "MODERN (1955 to date) $14 (standard) $20 (secure plus) 20 - 30 days $1000 (value max)" and here are the cost:

$14/coin x 5 coins = $70 + $8 handling + $21.95 (return shipping fee for 5-25 coins w/ total declared value less than $1000)===> Total cost = $70+$8+$21.95 = $99.95. This is EXCLUDING your cost of sending the coins in (should be between $10 to $20). So, you are looking at the cost of around $110 to $120 for grading 1 set.

If you are fortunate enough to be near by their facility, you can drop the package off once a month, on the last (or third) Thursday of the month (need to check my note when I first applied).

For NGC, they also charges $14 for Modern coins + $8 handling fee + return shipping fee. All in all I think the cost is about the same for both service (around $100 to $120 range) to get 1 set grade.

I am not an expert in this issue, and I just did a quick research online so if anyone else have more info or are expert in this please chime in. Thanks.

EDIT: Another thing I just found out, PCGS is running a Quarterly Special until the end of the year: http://www.pcgs.com/ccspecial.html in which you send 5 modern coins and pay for the grading of 4 coin. It's a $14 saving.

Any-News-On-25th-Anniversary-ASE-Set?

TIME: 1:22 PM
DATE: 11/8/11

Earle42 calls the now, ever-familiar one 800 USA MINT and chooses option zero.

A very polite customer service representative named Linda answers and Earle42 asks to be transferred to a supervisor because the other people in customer service (relating the current lineup of: Lori, Judy, Tiara, Steve, Yolanda, Patty, and Whitney) told me they do not have the authority to do what has been asked previously.

However, and quite nicely, Linda asks Earl 42 for his story. The ever-expanding story is once again unveiled to yet another polite representative. The result? Again the all too familiar tune the MINT-PR-people have deemed soothing for those awaiting help fills Earle42's auditory canal.

A semi-polite voice proclaims its owner is Maggie. Earl again relates the now=memorized story and is told only headquarters can handle this problem - and is assured that headquarters is being very diligent in searching down these cases. Assurance is given that headquarters will contact Earl 42 when their research is done.

When Earle42 asks if this call can be transferred directly to headquarters, Maggie states headquarters is not currently taking any calls concerning this type of situation. Relating concern that sets are already starting to be shipped, Earle42 asks Maggie how they will be able to contact him considering that every time he calls he has to provide them with his order number -- after which he is told that order number does not exist? Since he has been told the order was erased, how will they be able to trace him?

The reply is that all of these records are in the database. Again, carefully so as not to raise any hackles, the question is posed as to how a lost order number which has to be repeated each time a call is made, which obviously shows there is no record of the order, can be traced to Earle42's account? After a brief pause, Maggie again gives assurance that there are a few cases of "missing orders" such as this which will be taken care of.

Earle42 is very much looking forward to the time headquarters contacts him. Meanwhile, the eternal words of wisdom now ring in his mind... "To err is human... To really foul things takes a computer!"

Tune in next week...........

Here is my calculation of the price of grading at NGC & PCGS: add your cost of getting the coins safely to the TPG to these numbers.

NGC requires the use of the Modern Special tier for these sets. That costs $17 per coin plus $1 to return the mint packaging. Return shipping & insurance for one set is $22.95 and for five sets is $36.45. That makes the total cost of one set $109.95 ($21.99 per coin) and five sets $466.45 ($18.66 per coin). They state that they will use Early Release labels for all sets sent in by the required date (which is not yet set) unless you ask them not to do so.

PCGS appears to be slightly cheaper at $99.95 ($19.99 per coin) and $387.95 ($15.52 per coin) unless you want First Strike which makes it $189.95 ($37.99 per coin) and $837.95 ($33.52 per coin). That is assuming that the coins are submitted in the Modern tier and there are no special handling charges for the set (including free return of mint packaging). PCGS has said that all coins in unopened sets are eligible for 25th anniversary set labels and First Strike labels (I am very disappointed about the FS thing) but has made no mention of the return of mint packaging.

I think I'm only getting mine graded is so I can look at them. If I didn't get them graded I would have to leave them sealed for valuation reasons. I think I'm gonna keep the highest grades and cherrypick the best set. Then sell the rest and take the kids to Disney World. I have no tracking number but they have billed me so I know I'm getting it. I eish they would just ship it to NGC directly. Oh well I hope I see them by next week.

The 1995 sets can be had in OGP for much less than that. APMEX sells it for $6295 and has six in stock.
