Not my collecting focus, but I know some of you love minting oddities. Really small die used on huge, irregular flan:

Postage is steep, but seller is on the level. Just wanted to pass along!
Rest in Peace

Yes odd. If not a test strike, is there a possibility that it is overstruck on a previous emperor's coin? Or did the Romans not really do that much? I've been focused on the Byzantines lately so that is on my mind right now...

Crisis emperors didn't really do overstrikes - their priority was to melt, debase, and re-strike. I've heard that Tetricus' antoninianii actually beat out those of Claudius II, with a silver content of 1.5% or even lower. Interestingly, it has also been demonstrated that some Gallic barbarous coins were actually made out of orichalchum - melt down a sestertius and re-coin it into 10-20 small antoninianii.

As for this coin, I don't know why it was struck on such an irregular planchet.

This coin seems like a costly mistake for a Gallic Emperor whose reign was spent turning up cushions for funds to send his armies against Aurelian...interesting for us numismatists though!
