Have you tried an acetone soak yet? It might be lacquer. If not, then toning seems likely to me.

The silver War Nickels often show tones of dirty yellow, among others.

Agree w/ @coinfrog. Remember, the composition is unique among U.S. coins; hence, the unusual toning.

It is the copper/nickel mix that is toning it yellow. I have a bunch of silver and non-silver nickels that have 'yellowed' out on me.

Personally, I like the toning going on. A soak in acetone might not be a bad idea to try and rid it of the "dirt" spots.

Found this gold penny the other day. Thought it was something special till I looked up on line about gold pennies and a video shows you how to turn coins gold. Really, never knew you could do that. Even showed how to turn pennies silver colored. Disappointing!
