I was at work going through change when I came across this strange War Nickel. Was this caused due to a cracked die or could this have happened to the coin while out in circulation? I have never seen a coin like this before.

Here is a pic:

to CCF. It's a bit hard for me to tell by your pic but it could be a lamination error.

Definitely a lamination error. These were very common on War Nickels due to the unusual metal alloy used in them.

Lamination error? I am not in the know when it comes to coin terminology.

The obverse is perfectly normal. Hmmmm....

It is a lamination error.

Quote:
lamination
A thin piece of metal that has nearly become detached from the surface of a coin. If this breaks off, an irregular hole or planchet flaw is left.

A lamination is an internal flaw in the alloy which results in the metal peeling off the surface in thin layers. I suppose you could call it an error but it is exceedingly common and I see it more as damage because it will typically devalue a nice coin. However, the value of common circulated coins is not really affected by it.
