I believe this trend will continue though, as those who are selling are making a killing on the uninformed.

"Uninformed" works both ways ;)

While Everyone collects what they wish to, There is a lot more to a Congratulations set then most would think. I too collect the sets, just for My own reasons, on that topic, People collect them for gifts too, My Son and My DIL, are GW, having Our first Grand-son, THAT is the only reason I am trying to obtain the " W " minted set. In other years the San Francisco ASE was an oddity, one well worth the investment, IMO. I am sure there are others that have plenty of other reasons to collect the sets. These sets were originally produced to commemorate events, THIS event is just what the Doctor ordered....... PS, I have seen just a few products that over the years, sold out or went unavailable within 5 minutes......

Shutdowns have no impact on the mint. They're immune as their funding comes from their own fund from sales

The TSA gets its funding from the fees collected with the sale of tickets, but they're closed due to the partial government shutdown. Only part of the federal government is shutdown, so perhaps it's just as simple as the mint's funding has been passed while the TSA's has not.

Since FY 1996, the United States Mint has been operating under the United States Mint's Public Enterprise Fund (PEF). As authorized by Public Law 104-52 (31 U.S.C. § 5136), the PEF eliminates the need for appropriations.

Even so, that doesn't mean it's entirely business as usual at the Mint during the shutdown. A recent Coin World article about proof Ag ASEs at the recent FUN show had this to say
Quote:
Mint officials at the convention Jan. 9 during table setup indicated to Coin World they had been notified while aboard their flights of the possibility of being recalled to Washington, unless revised clearance would be received directly from the Treasury secretary amid the partial government shutdown.

T.V. Johnson, director of the Mint's Office of Corporate Communications, told Coin World Jan. 15 that once Treasury executives were informed of the Mint's potential to record nearly $2 million in numismatic sales, full travel authority was granted.

nope. I don't care for the congratulations set. I really only want the coin in it. if I have already acquired the coin, and it shows up in a set later in the year, I will not buy that set. if the only way to get that particular coin is to buy the set, then I might buy the set, or i'll just wait for slabbed examples to show up somewhere & buy one or two of those.

I'm not all that hot about all the stuff the mint makes. I'm also very lukewarm when it comes to all the packaging. I want fewer sets, fewer boxes & containers. I really just want the coins. I don't care for a coin in a capsule in a display case in a wrap in a box in another box. all the boxes take up a lot of space.

I've become a minimalist in my life & it shows up in my collecting, lol...

Not a bad way to do it. Quality over quantity.

TOTALLY makes sense and this is why I mainly entrap my coins in slabs. Much easier storage, much easier viewing, and a defined product when selling..

Of course, with that said, I can't get myself to toss the OGP so I guess I am actually taking a step backward by adding a slab.

Now if I would just buy them already in slabs them that would work....

Did this years set ever sell out or did it just go to backorder? For some reason I thought it sold out.
