I'm gonna go somewhere around XF40/45. Tough coin to grade based on those pics.

The ticks on the rim between 8 and 10 do not help the coin either.

I'd say EF-45.

Pictures aren't great, but perhaps XF-45.

IMHO, counterfeit.

Compare the "3" on your date with the "3" on the date of a known genuine 1893-O.

Your coin:

Genuine 1893-O:
1893-O-Morgan-Grade?

Interesting, are there any other indicators this may not be genuine? If so, I was sure fooled. It's not my coin, my Co worker brought them in to show me. He said they were passed down from his grandmother to mother in the 70s, and his grandmother got them from a shop she owned well before that. Unless he made all that up to see if he could fool me. Either that, the rest of the Morgan's he had were indeed from his family, and this 93-O was acquired at another point from a family member and put with the rest of them.

Either way, if there are any other indicators you guys see, please let me know. I will need to break the news to my coworker if the general consensus is that it is fake.

I'm leaning towards genuine. The date position and mint mark are a pretty good match for VAM-2. Sharper pictures of the date would help.

I still think it is real.

We can cuss and discuss it here for the next month and still be in a headlock about it. Only way to know for sure either way is 3rd party grading.

That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it!

If real,it is worth around $500-$700. You could send it in to ANACS and see for sure if real or not.

A close up of the date and mint mark would be beneficial.

Unfortunately, my co-worker took the coins with him to give to his rightful family member. I can usually get a bit better photos, but I was on the clock and was trying to help him out.

I did 3 different tests (weight, ping, magnet) and it passed all of them. They have been in his family for few generations, so it is hard for me to think fake. If it was fake and I was fooled, I need to put some serious consideration into doing much more studying.

I really appreciate all of your efforts in giving me your opinions on the coin. I was really trying to help out my co-worker to get a ballpark on value...and I'm not great at grading yet. Thank you all!

It appears to be an authentic Morgan dollar to me but I'm not convinced that it's not an altered date.

The "3" has the look of a cut-down "8" from an 1898-O. The photos weren't clear enough to see tooling marks. Even though there is damage to the "9," the "3" wouldn't match a modified 1883-O. The reverse photo wasn't clear enough to get a good capture of the mm or to do a VAM hunt, but the "3" isn't right for an 1893 Philadelphia, either.

I have to admit, I've seen several altered mm versions of the 1893-O and I can only remember seeing one or two altered date versions. This sure looks like one, though.
