Southern gold, especially from Dahlonega is tough to grade because of the notorious soft strikes. Here is the answer.  This is my latest purchase. |

Nice one! You can see the strike issues plainly on the reverse. Notice the strong STATES OF compared to the weak strike on the central devices. The grade looks spot on.

This a lovely coin with nice color, few marks, and no obvious signs of cleaning. There appears to be significant wear on the rims, Liberty's hair, and the eagle's neck, leg, and talons. The coronet appears worn down to the top of the L in LIBERTY. However, according to Doug Winter the 1852-D is known for serious strike weakness. So, maybe XF45 is technically correct. Sure seems generous by normal grading standards though.
