What Are Your 2021 Collecting Goals?

My 2021 Wrap-Up:

1. Finish Ike PCGS slabbed set - Didn't finish but knocked out four, adding three "core" and one "extended". This leaves 5 core and 2 extended, which I hope to be able to complete in '22.
2. Continue with my world paper money collection by adding at least 100 notes - Met this goal with about 120 world notes added.
3. If silver stays under 30 and the premiums decrease to closer to a dollar, resume monthly silver stacking - premiums are still pretty silly. No silver stacked in '21.
4. Add 5 older ASEs to the holes in my collection - no progress here. Too many current ASEs, Morgans, and Peace dollars to contend with this year.

Other than a few US Mint offerings, I think that's about as aggressive as I want to be this year. - "A few" -- HA! Good heavens they almost broke me this year (see #4 above).

@princetane, that sounds like a great year, and yes, "scope creep" is something I am always confronted with too. When I induge it, the remorse ends as soon as the coin arrives in the mail.

Rather than keep my quarterly updates, I'll just give a year end summary, adding that December was a bountiful month, so some of these are not yet in hand

1. Add any early dated coins (for me 1474-1506) I can find that fit my existing themes. I am missing 1483, 1486-88, 1491,1497,1506 most of which will be difficult, or may never get filled (except 1506 where there is a clear target). I was able to get dated 1506 (Pomerania) and 1497 (Brabant). But I also added a lot of undated medieval coins attributable to single years that fit with my existing collecting themes: 1472, 1471, 1463, 1450, 1443, 1440, 1427, 1403, 1376, 1373, 1363, 1337.
2. Fill the missing 17th century dates in my Kingdom of Poland OFEY (1656, 1657, 1659, 1679) two of these preferably with larger silver (1/4 thaler)from Torun and Gdansk mints. Done, though I decided to forego coins from those mints that have continued to escalate in price.
3. Fill a handful of other gaps in the 1600s (1639, 1641, 1642, 1692, 1695) with coins that fit my other themes.
(Edit: I just took care of 1642). Nearly done. Only 1695 remains for 2022.

You know I was scanning for 1486 and 1460 here.

Have any of you thought maybe your favourite dealers read this list and then work out what to offer you for sale. I state I want to get a shilling of Edward VI and voila one comes up for sale, then a VF coin of William IV and voila there they all are.

Anyone else had this coincidence of dream coins just emanating like that?

I spoke too soon. Had a couple of last-minute purchases over an egg nog or two the other night and have a 78D and 77D on the way, both MS65. Would like to have held out for 66, but these were relatively inexpensive so now I can bide my time for upgrades. That leaves 3 core and 2 extended.

Another year in the books! Time for a review:


Added two Barber dimes and one Washington quarter.


Picked up the last clad proof set I needed, along with one silver proof set and the final S-mint quarters.


Added 4 Mint Sets, plus the 2021.


Added 6 coins.


I was good this year and avoided impulse buys, but I laid the groundwork for starting a date set of Seated Liberty half dimes (through research). Since I haven't bought anything yet, I'd say this goal was successful.


I finished grading my coins and made some progress in swapping out old 2x2s, but I haven't even started the other tasks... But there's always next year!

With 5/6 goals completed and/or exceeded, I'm calling this a successful year. Here's to 2022!

Almost no purchases in the last three months of 2021, and most of the purchases that did happen almost entirely consisted of banknotes and/or ancient coins...

1a) In particular, fill in the remaining post-1750 holes (2021, 1844, 1823, 1817, 1795, 1783, 1781, 1780 [aside from the MTT], 1778, 1769, 1766, 1756, 1755, 1752)
Added 2021, 1817, apparently no others yet?
Now added 1823, 1783, 1780, 1778, 1769, 1766, and possibly 1752. That pesky 1844 continues to evade me - now apparently my only missing post-1800 date.
AFAIK no addition. I hadn't bought a lot in those three months, though, and I'm falling behind on Numista updates.
Added 1795, none of the others that I could see. Also added some 1740s dates. Still no 1844.

1b) If possible, get an unbroken line even further back

Ditto, and since then I found out that my smartphone is running out of photo storage memory
Storage memory issue temporarily fixed, situation otherwise unchanged.
Storage memory issues showing up again. Not sure what to do with it yet.
Now back to fixed, but I tend to take pics of my ancients first.


2) Related to the above: get some dated Islamic coins from the 15th century AD
