Interesting thoughts so far, I will have to look at all the known die states to see what Newcomb number it should get. I wonder if some of this weakness was caused by grease on the denticals and stars? If it is a fake, then it is a really good copy...

Put me in the genuine camp, but I would send the coin back to the seller for a refund. See below an 1851 NGC MS62 example with the same stars and denticles strike. OP Example NGC Genuine

coin does have some of the markers for N-24. Lump in correct place on N in cent on reverse. Also has some of the faint lines on the neck and hair buns on obverse. Also a faint crack at star 8. Denticles do look a bit suspicious though.

Really guys? Fake? Denticles can look like that on large cents, just like Seated dimes and Half Dimes. It's real, either AU58 or MS63

Even though the denticles look a bit odd I lean towards real also. Looks uncirculated on most of the coin but the stars being almost all flat also is odd for an uncirculated coin.

I myself am strongly leaning towards genuine, and I payed less than 50 bucks for it . To slider23s point, I want to actually get this authenticated by a TPG (real or not), since this is my highest grade now currently in my large cents collection. I knew that it had mushy denticles, but that looked like an incomplete strike to me. It to me has a subdued luster, but being 170 years old, it could have had episodes where the copper toned strangely.

Looks genuine to me as well, although surface originality/ color look suspect. AU58, likely Details.

I'll say genuine and AU-58.

altering my assessment. the last 2 photos seem to be more representational of the coin color and surfaces. I dont think the coin crosses over to MS. AU58

Quote: the last 2 photos seem to be more representational of the coin color and surfaces. The last two photos aren't the OP's coin. There is wear on the high points, AU58.

Oh boy, I am having too much fun with this thread , I don't mind at all learning your opinions. As to the luster, I can see some, but again subdued, as in it might have been lightly circulated to get it that color, then put away for a possible 145 years doing nothing until getting sold to a coin collector...

MS-details, cleaned (color is off). Might get market graded at AU-55 or so in a slab. A nice coin even if it gets bagged.
