1932 till 1969 they re-engraved the Dies. the Mint papers do not Lie, just the or some of the collectors do not want to admit.

Very Refreshing Read. Forgot about These Thanks All for Input...... PS, Just a pet peave, Some people use the term " Known " as the population reports are just considering the Registry sets and the Known graded coins. There is a Very strong chance the Coin Collecting Community Has NOT reported and or Has NOT graded their examples..................... They count Too....... Love these collectibles... Recheck all the Proof Sets....

The design on that area was weak on the tail feathers from the first year. When the Washington proof quarters started in 1936, it was with the normal design (Type A). Also showing the same weakness on that area. On the 1937 Proof quarters, it looks like some of the dies had fresher dies. The reverses were really getting weak in 1957. Looks like a working die was altered. Probably when that die was being worked on. Thus why so few examples on this die alteration. (The lines being incuse on the die, leaves them raised on the coins struck with that die) So probably not a large number of these out there.

@COOP: Sorry a misprint happened on your last photo. The word PROOF has no place here. Thinks happened.

1955 was one of the first proof die re-engraved used for the normal business strike. On those recycle dies we see real re-engraved dies. Very common for the period till 1970 and exceptionally in 1972 on RDV-007 when was a combination of hub doubling and re-engraving.
The 1956 type B business strike was use the 1955 working hub re-engraved. and is believe not more then 10k was strike with those dies. To day the survive of examples we can account at less the 1000

Rocky: Is your 1955 RTF a proof? I'm aware of the RTF for the 1950 proof. Regarding re-engraving in general it's fairly well known lots of work was done especially on the wing feathers. There are several graded examples without attribution as the TPG's don't recognize aka attribute all of them. Nonetheless, there are collectors. Regarding "known" examples I always refer to known as graded and attributed by TPG's as of course there are more including raw examples "known" within this thread. I'm headed to the Fiesta bowl then California but here's a quick pic

Nice CAS, There out are more. The RTF are know to begin in 1950. TPG's recognize only what was publish. In my next publication I will explain and also prove that was a matter for finish the production by this methods. What is hard to establish it is the rarity. But in any case no more then one or two dies was use each year. Your 57 used the 1956 hub and die and particularly it is the most clean. I am glad to know that the collectors are aware and my guide of the varieties will help to see more. Rocky do a great job looking for and find and analyze. Those coins are more then others thinks because this method was use only on quarters and halves. More you will find in the guide and Rocky is one of the main part. PS: If you want to know more about your coin PM me. You has the second Die as I categorize. Was only two Dies.

Silvio got to tell you this. the re-engraving is not all the same. there is a very big difference. enough that they will have to be catalogued.
