since both sides show an opening of increasing width at the surface I'm leaning toward defective planchet, but it's a tough call

Below ONE on the reverse, it looks like the rim was altered post strike like it was dropped. But still think this might be a planchet issue. But something seem wrong also. I'll ask Mike Diamond in to see what he thinks.

I'm leaning towards a planchet issue. maybe combined with a struck through some sort of debris

My vote is for planchet error ; AKA Blow Hole .  |

This is a classic ragged perforation, otherwise known by the misnomer " Blowhole". Tensile stresses generated during rolling opened up a gap in the coin metal strip. The bifacial beveling seen here is characteristic of ragged perforations. Error coin writer and researcher.

Now how cool would it be if the Blow Hole occurred in very, very close proximity to the rim--or at the rim? Wonder what the coin's edge would look like? |
