I'm just asking whether these face-value coins are worth the cost of a 2X2 holder since they will unlikely ever be worth more than face value. Replies appreciated.

Frog, I do understand your plight, and I think you mean well, but you must let things run their course, there is no other measure for this. Let folks save what they want. It may change over time, and it may not. To some extent, you have to let people be. I know you went through similar tactics in your early searching and collecting, we all do.

As usual, -makecents- makes sense. A coin collection is both embodied knowledge and the value of the physical collection itself. Especially in the early stages of the hobby, the advancement of knowledge is much more important than the coins themselves. There is also much to be said about enjoying the process.

Heck, I'm almost 60 years into this. You ought to see some of the coins I saved. Collect what you want. Can't get much better than face value, unless you find them.

I'm not sure why people have to be so negative. Keep what you like. I do.

Don't mean to be negative. Just tryinig to encourage young collectors to use their time and energy doing something more productive, and with more learning potential, than searching endless rolls of common coins. That's my conclusion looking back over a long life of collecting. Shout me down if you like.

Shout me down if you like. I understand, I do but re-read my post above. Sometimes, there are things you can't rush, just sayin.

Quote: Just tryinig to encourage young collectors to use their time and energy doing something more productive, and with more learning potential, than searching endless rolls of common coins. I search $20 of nickels every week, and I find a 2006-2020 WDDR pretty much every week. All it takes is a cheap plastic clip-on magnifier and a flashlight. Identifying them requires learning how to use the DDR catalogs. It teaches you how to differentiate MD vs. DDD vs. real doubling. I've learned a lot about mint marks, obverse and reverse design changes, and all sorts of other useful information. TL;DR: you can learn a lot about coins and varieties via searching rolls of common coins, essentially for free. Just my 2¢.

Plenty of good stuff can be found via CRH. Just takes time, patience, and dedication. I have found quite a lot of variety and errors coins while searching. It's time consuming, but for me, it's worth it.

Yeah, that 1938 is in good condition for its age. I would go over all the pre-1970 coins carefully with a magnifier. There are a lot of minor doubled dies lurking out there in circulation.
