Probably not TOO far-far, considering how far you have already come! And believe me... we would not laugh at anyone (except ourselves, like Wheezy mentioned). No harm and definitely no foul - we are very glad to have you here. We live to look at pictures, ask and answer questions, and share our knowledge and love of the hobby with those who do the same  |

Great finds with your metal detecting. Yeah it's best to not take life too seriously.
Being young and having this hobby is very educational. There are more lessons learned than just what we learn about coins.
We learn a lot about people and history. I have learned so much about how to interact with people. How to be fair, how not to let people take advantage of me, although that is a lifelong watch.
I have learned from my mistakes.
I have made some great friends. We learn what makes some things special rather than ordinary. We learn how to appreciate art. There is a lot more to the hobby than coins. It is good to have you here metaldetectingtaylor.
The young numismatists are the future of our hobby.

At least you didn't do what I did with my first Dansco. All my coins are in 2x2s in pages in a folder, so I took them all out of the 2x2s, put them into the Dansco, decided after a couple of days that I didn't like them in there, took them all out and had to put them all back into 2x2s and back into the folder. In the transfer back I dropped a very nice shilling which now has a lovely ding on the rim. The Dansco ended up in the bin.

all the lincolns, one large cent, the liberty head, buffalo, and Jefferson nickels, the barber, mercury and two Roosevelt dimes, the SLQ variety2, The 2 Washington quarters the walking liberty,franklin, and Kennedy half dollars, the morgan, peace and Eisenhower dollar, all the bicentennial, the susy B, sacagwea, State Quarter (Silver proof) and the silver american eagle. |

Unlike these young guy's I have been trying to figure my first dansco as well, I have used Guardmaster and Uni safe. How do you slide the sleeve out initially ?

I just emptied a few albums to get coins out of them. It is easy to booger up the edges unless you are very careful. When it is empty I use a thin piece of cardboard or you can use a pair of tweezers. I do have a pair of stamp tongs someplace and they would be ideal.
YOU DON'T EVER HAVE TO REMOVE THE BACK SLIDE.
First use your fingers in the hole areas and see if you can get just the slightest bit of the slide to come out. Get your tweezers and pull it straight out.
If you can't get it to budge, lift the edge paper slightly using a thin piece of cardboard like a matchbook cover, and try to leave the slide lay on the thick part that the holes are punched in. Get a pair of narrow tweezers and pick under and over the front slide and squeeze your tweezers to get it out.
WHEN YOU HAVE COINS IN THE ALBUM
Be careful, When adding to or taking out coins, make sure you push down on the front of the holes with the plastic slides in place and push the coins already in it flush with the back slide. If you don't the front slide may scuff the front of your coin when you are removing the slide. Push your coins free one at a time onto a soft surface by pushing on the back slide and the front slide removed, one pair of coins exposed at a time.

I have found, if you remove the front slide (not always that easy on a new album particularly) you can then push up on the reverse plastic sleeve (without removing it) and then it will pop up the edge of the coin through the front slot. You can then get a fingernail/toothpick under it to remove it. Wheezy, do you really use tweezers on your coins? Oops, sorry Mr. Wheezy! I reread the post and I now know you use the tweezers to grasp the plastic sleeve to remove it. Obviously we would not use metal tweezers on our coins. Obviously!  Edited by Moe145

Good info Wheezy ... I do it the same way you do ..
Another thing I do .. when I first get a new Dansco .. before putting in all the plastic sleeves I vacuum all the holes for dust. I think when they cut the holes during manufacture there is a paper dust left. I have seen it get on proof coins (Lincoln cents) and over time start spots. Sometimes if I know I am going to be adding coins in the coming day or weeks I will not push the top slide all the way back in .. I will leave about a 1/4 inch so I can grab it better when adding those last few coins for that section.

Yes I agree about the dust, I do that as well. No LOL! I wouldn't use anything but my clean fingertips on the edge of a coin. No tweezers.

WD, As expected, great advice from a seasoned Numismatist, Mike...ps; great tip about a vacuum for the album dust...I have cleaned the plastic slides before coin inserting, but that is a great idea, all this effort, who wants spots that could be avoided...  |
