'48, no doubt. I've about given up hope on a new Henning variety discovery.

The good news is the guy has 100% positive feedback....so if it really is an altered 48' he might make it right. The bad news is no where in his listing does he say they are silver nickels nor does he say they ARE 1943...he says they are "marked" 1943 (interesting choice of words imo)...If he knew about it thats very shady (you will know if he tries to say...but my listing says "marked"....I hope its silver and has no mint mark...might be a great find! Let us know how it turns out!

I think it is an altered 1948 also. The shape of the so-called "3" is different from the "3" on the genuine silver 1943.

I think you got a great deal. Henning nickels from the 1940s sell in circulated grades for $20-30 each, I think. So great pickup!

It was a no show in the mail today. After reading the general consensus that its a 1948 I went from a high to a quick low.Oh well! that's about my kind of luck but still 3 of them are 35% silver which gives them $6.68 silver market value.still OK ,I only spent $4.65 total. No harm no foul.I'll still post some pics when it shows up.Thanks for all the input

I think that the 48 is a neat coin. That reddish color is a sort of oxidation and it appears the damage or alteration was done a long time ago in the nickels life. Personally I would value it as a worthy novelty being it is not a recent tampering. Not from what I can see.

I copied that pic. and blew it up and checked every angle by rotation and I believe that it is a 3 and not an 8 If you look at the 8 and 3 horizontally you will notice that the upper loop on the 8 (left side of it) is parallel with the right edge of the 4 on a normal 1948. This digit hooks down and to the left like the 3 normally would. Just what I noticed anyway.

I compare to a 1948 ... Looks pretty much the same as a 1948 to me. The light angle on the 1948 even makes it look like a 1943. Maybe this is not even altered and in hand it will be a photographic illusion. Maybe the rest of the 8 is still there but darkened.
