I hang out at a few different coin shops, one I was at so much they put me to work.
In my experience if you buy a lot of coins from the same dealer, they will let you
purchase at greysheet prices (CDN).

I paid $140 for the 1997 Botanic gardens set. Greysheet is $145/$155.
That was not at the shop I work at, but another that gives me good
prices ... because I buy a lot of coins.

Greysheet on just the 1997 Botanic garden dollar is $32. So I have
$108 into the 1997 matte proof nickel SP 69. As for the grading
the last three were sent in for me .. for free. So I had nothing
into the grading. I see the 1997 SP 69 sell for around $175 to $200

For me a good deal on a coin is one where you could turn around and sell the
coin for what you have in it .. or more ..

Greysheet for the 1994 Jefferson set is $39/$42. I know that dealers
buy at below greysheet, so I make offers at or near greysheet.
The dealer has to make money on each sale .. but they also want to make the
sale. So get the price you want or pass.

Only time I do different, is on coins that are hard to find, that I want.

WOW .. yes $50 for a Botanic garden set is a steal ...

Just knowing the grey sheet price can help. The last coin show I went to, a
dealer had to 94 Jefferson sets, I ask what he wanted for them, he said $42 each.
I ask and he would take $80 for both, I ended up buying other coins, because at that
time I had three at home .. I have two now.

Buying on ebay you just have to watch and know when it is a good deal ..

Some dealers will let you check greysheet prices ... once you get to know them.

You can subscribe, where you can download updates or do a one time
download. There are differnt subscriptions. For example:Coin Dealers Newsletter (CDN),
CDN quarterly and certified coin dealer newsletter.

The main CDN shows single copy price of $4.00

Where can I find the 1997 SP or SMS Jefferson. Do they only come in the Coin & Currency Set. Or will the Prestige Set also have them. I've only seen postings for the C&C set but wanted to make sure. Thanks!

There are three matte proof coins that fall into this group

1994 P matte proof Jefferson nickel, mintage 167,703 when graded by NGC it will get a SP grade
it only came in the 1994 Jefferson Coin and Currency set

1997 P matte proof Jefferson nickel, mintage 25,000 when graded it by NGC it will have a SP grade
it only came in the 1997 Botanic Gardens Coin and Currency set

1998 S matte proof Kennedy half dol., mintage 62,350 (I have not found official mintage) NGC grades them SP
it only came in the 1998 Robert F Kennedy two coin commemorative set.

Many of these coins are broken out of the sets, some are slabbed.

Most times there are several available on ebay. I also see members selling them on this site.

Edit: Prestige sets have regular proof coins, not matte proof coins

A quick search turned up the following information on Prestige Sets:

"Prestige Proof sets were first produced in 1983. Prestige sets contain a commemorative dollar and half dollar for that year as well as a proof issue of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson nickel, Roosevelt dime, Washington quarter and Kennedy half-dollar. The production of Prestige Proof Sets was suspended with the last issued being 1997. Each set is encased in a book-like case and comes in a laminated box."

Does anyone have any other information on these sets and why they stopped making them? I started collecting all U.S. Mint Sets in 1999, so obviously missed these guys. I do have the American Legacy sets starting in 2005 which seem to be similar (although much bigger).

As a follow-up, is there any site out there that has a comprehensive listing (with descriptions) of all US Mint products over the years? There are so many products and annual variants of coins that it's hard to keep track. For example... how many versions of the ASE's are there going to be this year?

David F ... Welcome to CCF

Not sure how this will go, bringing up a 5 year old post.

A matte proof coin will have a satin look over the entire
coin. When you see a business stike a proof strike and
a matte proof side by side, it is easier to see the difference.

It would be very unusal to find a 1997 P matte proof nickel
in circulation. Most of the 25,000 sets are traded for the
nickel, so collectors would not be dumping it into circulation.

If you can get a good picture of your coin, I would suggest
starting a post here on CCF and get some opinions. Or maybe
take it to a local coin shop or coin show to get other opinions.
