Quote: John77 how many nickels had you searched by the time that you found one?
I'd have to go back through my records to see... I want to say around 500,000, but I would need to find my journal entry and corroborate it with the right spreadsheet... I'll get back to you on that.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!
There is something satisfying getting these 10,000 nickels all rolled out. It also makes it nice while searching through them to have an idea of how much time is left to finish a box, half box, etc.
First box is done and was average. I did break my buffalo dry spell at 20,285 nickels with a dateless buffalo. I might be able to pull a date off of it.

Quote: It's very zen the way they are all laid out there.
I agree. Some people might not get it, but I get it.
Two boxes left, found another dateless buffalo. A buddy of mine stopped by who has been watching the channel wanted to see how nic a date works. It worked on both buffalos, a 1916-P and a 1920-P
These are tough boxes so far, a pair of silvers a 1943-P and a 1944-P. Average number of 1938-1959 nickels per box is only 22.66 nickels per box. Ouch.
I'll hopefully get through the last two boxes tomorrow which will bring the total number of nickels searched to 110,000 nickels.

Well done.

Below are the totals from this latest hunt, which puts me at 110,000 nickels searched. Still no 1948-S. This was a brutal hunt, with only 117 nickels from 1938-1959 in this batch of 10,000 nickels.
Average number of 1938-1959 nickels per box is only 22.66 nickels per box. Ouch.
I wish I could get that many here... I'm closer to 17 per these days. You're also at about one War Nickel per 3,000 coins or so... outside of my one lucky teller (who I'm close to that number with), I'm closer to one every 6,000 coins this year.

My only thing with nic-a-date is it discolors the coin in the date area... whereas dipping it in vinegar, while it takes longer to reveal a date, doesn't make the coin look uneven.
