Hi, I am not really a coin collector but I think I am starting to become one. This is a 1968 no mint mark Lincoln Memorial penny. The rim has a weird fold at the bottom left side. Is this a mint error?

On the back of the coin (photo below) there seems to be something that looks like an upside down "D" just above the letter C in the word CENT. Also, the area in the middle, the stairs seem to be missing/

I hope it's worth more that a penny!
Thanks in advance

I agree it's just Post Mint Damage. I was going to post earlier but I did not want to be the bearer of bad news.

Click on a bunch of the other peoples posts in this forum to get an idea of what to start looking for. There is not any way I can think of that a D could get misplaced where you think you are seeing it. There are plenty of things to look for on these coins, just keep searching and studying what others are finding. It won't be long until you come back with a real error.

Here is a link to Coppercoins website (the place most people look when searching for Lincoln Cent errors and varieties). It is an invaluable site that will teach you a lot. Just type in the 1968 in the "From" date box and click on Philadelphia for the mint mark. It should show you 8 listed varieties for that date/mint mark combination. Then use it for any other dates/mm combinations you want to research.

I'm wondering if the mark above the C is perhaps a counterstamp (where a person takes a coin and puts a stamped marking on it to make it 'unique'. Jbuck, a moderator here, has an Ike with a J stamped on it. A quick search using the Search tool and browsing counterstamp should yield you some threads to read.

Welcome to the mix here and enjoy the hobby - plenty to learn and enjoy!!

The no mint mark thing happens on all Philly cents. That is normal.

The eyes are playing tricks on you. When you see something on a coin, then the mint figures out something when it is nothing. This happens a lot on new collectors. After a few thousands of cent your realize if is nothing like any shape of any device from the mint process and then see if could not be a hubbing issue, mint mark issue, just just something you notice on a coin. Damage can make material from the field raise in various directions. Just a normal coin with some damage.

Thanks everyone. My sister was going to steal all my pennies to go to the dollar store but I caught her just in time, whew! :D!
Seriously, I do appreciate all your help. I will be posting a few more. They're probably all PMS.

Just keep searching. You will find something if you have a good loop and keen eye for spoting what to look for.

You can always go buy some from the bank. I have had good luck with roll hunting and so have many others.
Rest in Peace

Thanks everyone. I found some more old coins. Here is one of them that I have on ebay. I have nothing to lose. I explained about it at the auction.

Linybuggy, Concerning ebay coin. You may want to search the " Cud" definition here before posting more. Cud always flows from or involves the rim. Looks more like a die chip maybe if not damage. I need a closer look. Thanks, Doug.

PS: Rookies opinion.
PSS: You may want to compare to coppercoin just in case.

I just see a die chip on the "T". Common. A Cud is a breaking off of the outside edge of a die that shows on the rim. These are desirable to collectors. A chip is common.
