Do modern Kennedy half dollars really have a future? They do have a relatively low and fixed mintage each year. Having said that, most of these will be an abundance in excellent condition as they're not issued for circulation. I am kinda surprised these are still minted after last years anniversary. At the very least a new design would have been welcomed. Nothing against the half, but is it really necessary? They are rarely used and not even issued for circulation anymore.

I am a fan and collector of Kennedy halves, But I think it is time for them to go.

The only reason they keep making them is for the cash flow it gives the Gov.

Time to let them go.
In a way I was hoping the anniversary set was going to be the final hurrah to the series and either discontinue the coin or change it up.

They could have changed it, more than 25 years has passed since the current design was introduced. Why they chose not to is beyond me. But yes, definitely time to let them ride off into the sunset.

with Kennedy on the half and the other Presidents already on the other 4. I bet its set in stone for a long time. no legislator would want that topic brought up on his term. the halves fixed mintage was doubled in 2013 for some reason ? I thought I heard that the Fed Reserve order some more for the stock pile.
with halves not issued for circulation any more is a catch 22 story...its not the gov't fault...if people/commerce want them, the mint will crank up the presses for them because its on the books to make more.

I think the Kennedy half will be with us for a long time to come. It's a money maker for the mint.

As long as people are buying them, they will keep selling them (at a premium, of course).

No they aren't necessary at all, but the Mint makes millions of dollars a year selling them to collectors. Why give that up as long as the suckers/collectors are buying them.

I wish they would change to the design too. The nickel and dime needs a complete change too. Especially the nickel.

I am of the opinion that if a coin is legal tender (precious metals coins aside) they should be circulated or done away with as they serve no purpose for the majority of the citizenry. This would mean the half dollar and dollar coin should be ended as serving no earthly purpose.

That being said I will maintain my dollar and half dollar albums until that time.

If these coins were to be made into honest commerative coins they would have a somewhat true purpose. They are really nice coins but circulating coins need to be circulated. If the public doesn't want them then they should be discontinued.

Sometimes we, the public don't know what's good for us. The public "wants" cents and nickels, two units of money that can't buy you anything by themselves, but not halves.

At this point it's not costing anyone (except collectors) anything to keep halves around. The only ones made currently are NIFC collector issues and as jbuck pointed out, the mint makes lots of money on those. I'm happy for the annual issues and hope they continue for a long time. I'd be OK with a design change but I'm not unhappy with the Kennedy design.

No, the one dollar note should be ended, then the one dollar coin would have purpose.

Hard to imagine the Mint willingly giving up the revenue source that the Kennedy half represents.

My bet is that this debate will still be ongoing when the Kennedy half special 100-year anniversary coin set is released.

They just changed the nickel a few years ago, so don't look for that one anytime soon. The Dime, however, is seriously overdue.
