Yes. Top layer is at 150/255 opaqueness.

The PCGS photo was probably taken completely perpendicular to the coin. The OP's photo was likely not. Sorry NSS-52. Your evidence is not conclusive to me.

As usual, opinions are all over the map with a coin like this.

You might as well send it in to ANACS for a quick and dirty TPG. Till that happens you'll never know.

For transparency's sakes, I did not take these pictures head on. It was at an angle. Let me provide a picture taken looking straight down/perpendicular and maybe the overlay will be conclusive. Thank you for the effort with this it is much appreciated. Anacs will probably be my best bet for now

This is very exciting thread.

I certainly want this to be genuine for Steelers72. It certainly is an attractive piece.

As for the authenticity, I am with chesterb. There are minor differences, but one thing that sticks out is the "beak" of the eagle. They are definitely different on those two pictures. Also, I thicknesses of the jaw bone, breast feathers, leg feathers, letters, might be evident of a well made cast copy. Just my opinion.

At the bottom of the post with the overlay, perhaps you missed it, I said "It is still possible that the photography has distorted the images, but it appears that there are some differences between the two coins."

My conclusion (coins are different) was tempered with (might be the photos).

Photography is frequently ALL we have upon which to begin forming conclusions. If someone posts a photo and asks "is this coin genuine"? without providing any other facts that sway an opinion (like I bought this 1893-S on the street in Hong Kong for $10), one tends to make initial conclusions based on the photo provided.

I will add now, the coin, if fake, if a very good one to the naked eye.

nss-52, I took your photo-layer approach for a spin in Photoshop, aligned and corrected for distortion best I could and came up with this:

Layer 1:
Trade-Dollar-Grade-Opinions

Layer 2:
Trade-Dollar-Grade-Opinions

Layer 2 50% opacity over Layer 1:
Trade-Dollar-Grade-Opinions

My correction is a tad off but best I can tell, every detail of Steelers72's Trade dollar is exactly identical to the real one. I'm convinced any perceived difference is due to toning, lighting and image quality. If it's counterfeit, I sure don't see it.

Wow, thank you all for this help! It is very very helpful and much appreciated. I think it is genuine. when I get around to it, I may send to ANACS. The person I bought this from specializes in Trade dollars and has many proofs PCGS slabbed after he purchases them raw (outside of my type set budget though) I really feel this isn't a fake. The luster in hand convinces me, but the differing opinions will be noted if I send it in.

What do you guys think of the toning? A few collectors from another forum saw the pictures and believe it is AT.

I also posted this coin on the PCGS forums, and a Trade dollar expert believes it to be genuine. Also, he believes this is likely AT, and even showed me one he owns with the same toning. Apparently its "twin" and possibly done by the same person.

Personally I think it's natural, but who am I to say anything I'm not an expert. I love the look though.
