Hi all,

Bought this beautiful Newfoundland half...I know its obviously cleaned, but other than the scratch on the top left of the reverse, the detail is amazing.

What grade would you give it? Appreciate the input

Low AU details, heavy cleaned. No TPG would certify it ... it would be bodybagged. It's not worth grading.

Yes, it's a shame that it has been cleaned, would have been a nice one if not for that.

AU with a cleaned designation

I am now of the opinion that it is almost worthless to have anything graded at all. Let the owner/ buyer be their own judge. ICCS is too inconsistent in their grading. PCGS is way inconsistent with NL coins unless they are mint state.

Def not worth grading with the obvious cleaning anyway.

I couldn't disagree, any AU58 and under are not worth grading. Unless they are some type of a rarity.

Ouch! I fear the reverse gouges happened during the cleaning. I agree, AU details both because of the cleaning and the gouges. Definitely not worth grading. That would have been a beauty, if original.

Probably, but maybe it was really ugly and the uniformed person who perpetrated this tragedy could have been well intentioned. Or more likely, they were looking to make a fast buck.

Looks like it was whizzed. Would we classify whizzing as a form of cleaning?

Agreed, I'm sure I've seen whizzed coins that I did not know were whizzed.

I believe whizzing entails the use of a rotary power tool?

Perhaps this coin was cleaned with a non-powered wire brush of some sort. All that acne on it, especially on the obverse. Really looks like abrasive friction.

Or are there chemicals that would do that to the surface?
