My wife has been pulling coins out of circulation and putting them in Whitman books since she was a kid. I got into coin collection when gold and silver dropped. Seemed like a good way to invest in those. But it wasn't long before the collecting bug hit me, and I was after MS Morgan's etc. And probably went over the deep end on that.

But over the weekend my wife and I sat down together and went through all our change. Filling in those Whitman albums as we could. Of course debit card use means our coin bucket wasn't very full. But it was nice to get away from the hunt for MS 64s for a while.

And the two of us spent a very enjoyable day together.

I enjoyed those years tremendously. It was such a joy to finally fill a hole from circulation.

I still have my first Whitman albums that I filled from circulation, but I kept upgrading the coins even 25 years ago that I kept few of the circulation coins. I did fill the stare and National parks quarters from circulation, hence why the national park isn't filled.

"Good old fashioned" for me, means what collectors in the 19th Century did.
Numismatically, my grandfather would have considered me to be old fashioned!
Not Whitmans but trays in coin cabinets, just like the museums.
That also means collecting World and ancient coins from an earlier period than the 19th Century.

However, coin storage and display for me in current times is more contemporary, with each coin stored and described in Mylar / cardboard flips, in PVC free album pages.

A great cheap challenge is Jefferson nickels and Lincoln memorials from circulation.

Yes, you probably won't find a Jeff 50-d or early branch mints, but it's more likely than finding silver.

Of course by today I was back to online auctions and picked up a couple of what I hope will be MS Peace dollars.

I can not agree more.

Finding circulation pieces and putting them on a cheap page is a big delight of mine.

These are all current change coins from rolls of coins and they are all the best examples I can find. Because we only have a few years to choose from, I can get two or more of each.

Just bought a big bag of bulk coins today and probably 500 or 600 modern and a good mix of State Quarters and very late dimes I can add to my collections.
Loving Halfcrowns. British and Commonwealth coins 1750 - 1950 and anything Kiwi.
If it's round, shiny and silvery I will love it.

Speaking of this - bought this bag of modern circulation coins tonight.

$100 NZD and already pulled out $23 in US currency including 66 quarters (37 are state and America the Beautiful ones).

Heaps of Japanese yen, Korean won, Pacific coins (Fiji) - British (At least 10) so fun to keep and resell.

No silver, no halfcrowns but lots of fun

Yes, just give a pile of common coins from circulation or world coins and I am happy as a pig in poo. No high end stuff for me.

It is possible to complete the Jefferson set from circulation, and a few here on the CCF have done it. Unfortunately you would probably need to search 1/4 million or more 5 cent pieces before you found the last key date. But that is "only" 125 boxes.
