It's a standard 1968 US dime. It looks like it's been "spooned" but I can't think why someone would do that to a dime. Otherwise it's just severe damage.

P.S. I edited your post for the sake of our dial-up users

By "spooned", do you mean someone basically pressed it?

Spooning a coin is basically hitting it a lot on the edge to flatten it out to make a ring. Most give up after a short while but if done right such as THIS DUDE, You can make a cool silver ring out of a silver Half Dollar

Your dime is either severe damage or someone playing with a hammer on concrete seein what would happen to it. Non silver coinage is almost impossible.

Ok, but I'm really skeptical that it says 1968. It doesn't seem it could look like that in any scenario.

Even if there was any question about the "6", mint mark
placement helps to narrow the possible dates.

On the coin rings: (sorry for hijacking)

Those are awesome! Thanks for the link!
I wonder if anyone has done that with a gold coin?
Something like a Rand (purely bullion coin), or
maybe a common US gold that has been holed or
otherwise jewelery damaged in the past... ?

My wife wants to renew our vows around our 20th
anni... It would be so cool to make a pair of
gold rings like this.

This coin has bounced around in a clothes washer or dryer for a while. This tends to turn the edge of the coin inward. The date has just taken a severe hit.

Here'e a link to another site on these rings. This guy actually makes them so the engraving is visible on the outside.

The coin in this post is not spooned and has nothing to do with the rings.

Like one person said earlier, it is the victim of the back of a commercial clothes dryer. Coins get stuck in there and tumble around until the service people take the back of the machine off and clean the coins out.

I know that some of you may cringe that some folks here might cringe that rings are made from coins like that...but those are pretty cool.
