I have a 1987 penny, no mint mark. It appears to have two edges in the upper left obverse. Also in "IN" in IN GOD WE TRUST appears to be doubled. Any thoughts. All will be appreciated. I apologize for the quality of the photo. I took it using my phone. Thank you.
If you closely look at the "IN" of "IN GOD WE TRUST" to me, there appears to be indents coming down from the top of each letter. Almost as if the die moved and scraped the planchet before the final impression was completed.
Note the devices are smaller than normal. So the die was polished to remove the Ridge Ring, but now it is coming back again, weakening the devices to the point that they start to disappear. Just the second stage of DDD on Lincoln Cents after a polishing altered the size. (So I'm thinking this is after the second polishing of the die. The first polishing removed the DDD on the devices towards the rim. Still has a lot more coins to strike before retirement)
CoopHome: What is DDD and does it have stages? Devices move towards rim - Ridge Ring - Die polishing
