Good Afternoon... I just found a 1964 Nickel. I think it's a SMS. Can anyone help? The Nickel on the left is a PROOF, the Nickel on the right is the SMS I think. Thank you for your time and help!

No. There are no 1964 SMSs in the wild. All the ones that were ever minted are accounted for.

Just a nice, well-preserved business strike, it appears.

Your nickel looks like a very nice early die state business strike. Quote: No. There are no 1964 SMSs in the wild. All the ones that were ever minted are accounted for. Respectfully, I'm not sure that's accurate. No one even knew they existed until about 1993 because there are no records as to how many were minted or, for that matter, no records to show why they were even minted. Last time I checked PCGS estimated as many as 50 were in existence, but that's clearly just a guestimate since there are no records other than their own grading reports to use.

Yes, it is accurate. If you didn't know the mint director, you didn't get one. They have all been accounted for.

You don't have one . They as you have been informed are not in the wild . Google the subject and you will learn an interesting Story .

Every source I've read says no one knows how many were made or why they were made, (although there are many theories as to the why question), so I find it difficult to support the assertion that all of the minted 1964 SMS coins have been accounted for when we don't even know how many were minted.
I've also read that she gave sets away (although their first discovery occurred only after her estate and collection was liquidated), but that doesn't tell us how many sets were made, does it?
I'm certainly willing to admit I've been misinformed, though. Can you let me know your source for how many were minted?

A sincere Thank you to all the people / collectors that posted. I truly appreciate your time and help! The part that I am confused about is this, the coin came from a 1964 Proof Set. So does this mean it is still just a business trike? One last question, if I posted the back of the Nickle, would anyone be able to tell if this Nickle that I took out of a 1964 Proof Set is "MAYBE" a SMS Nickle? Also, I searched eBay for 1964 Business Strike Nickle, there was maybe 20 listings and none look like my Nickle. Maybe I am just praying I found something worth a lot money. Thanks again!! Kimberly

If it came in a proof set, then it's a proof, but I can't see it well enough to confirm from your picture. Are you sure it came from a proof set and not just a regular old uncirculated mint set?
It is 1000% not an SMS. I do not even need to see a picture to tell you that. The only 64 SMS coins minted were in the possession of the then mint director and were purchased at her estate sale. We see this question constantly, and it does get a little tedious when people refuse to accept the fact that these coins simply can't be found. It's like if someone posted a picture of a desk they found at a garage sale asking "is this the Resolute Desk?" - NO! We know where the resolute desk is, we know where it came from, and we know you can't find it at a garage sale.
Also, it's spelled nickel, not nickle.
