Rarely do these come up, but I watched the Heritage auction come and go, this lovely F15 example went for $78K including fees. As a type set collector I will never feel my collection is complete without one of these, but .. Any thoughts, anyone else out there hoping/dreaming of getting one of these some day?

Dream about it? That is probably what most of us here on the site will ever be able to do about it!
At least they are good dreams!

I've wanted one ever since I first heard about them. I'm still waiting to hit the lottery so I can afford one.

Surprisingly I don't care for one. Too small with an ugly design, but I can appreciate the history.

One of about 5 coins I need to complete my type set. It plus a Stella and a Gobrecht dollar are the ones I don't realistically stand a chance of getting. The other two are a quarter and a half dollar. The two in mid-grade would cost about $100,000 together. Not much of a chance there either. C'mon Multi Millions or Powerball!
Describe it as if there were no picture. Picture it as if there were no description.

There are a number of dreams I have, and this isn't one of them.

Unquestionably an important part of early American coinage, but in my opinion it falls somewhere in between a pattern piece and circulation issue. Personally I don't think it's a necessary component to completing a type set. I would still love to have one for what it is though!

My dream of having one extends as far as someone magically giving me one. Otherwise even if I had the money I'd probably buy 100 other coins instead. I suppose the fact that Jefferson likely had almost every one of them in his pocket/possession has a certain cachet.

Unfortunately I don't expect to ever see myself in a position where I could spend $78k on a single coin. Even $78 was sky-high for most of my collecting time (and is now sky-high again, though this will hopefully only last for a few months).

they are really cool. one of my favorite coins. awesome history. if I inherited one I would put it on loan to a museum. if I cherrypicked one I would sell it. I wont buy one to keep.
I collect low grade large cents. I currently have >230 Sheldon varieties and >235 middle date Newcomb varieties.

Quote: ugly design The obverse is ugly, but I love that little scrawny chicken on the back, look at him all determined to get going and take off, just like the brand new nation itself.

FWIW I actually think of this design as really pretty? But of course, however pretty, it's still orders of magnitude out of my budget.
(It's also at a level where I'm more likely to end up with a good copy than an original, and I'd really rather not resort to slabbing.)

Well, it is on my want list, and most likely that's where it will stay...

Now... out of curiosity... why specifically does this question pertain to the half disme instead of the disme?
