I havn't put much up on ebay for quite a few months, but really noticing the impact of increased fees and FV on top of taxes. All in fees are starting to hit 16%+, no longer a power seller, but really starting to question the value of it. Recently had about $50 in fees on a $300 item.
Anyone have any thoughts on how to make ebay cheaper or is it time to just move on?
I usually sell in spurts, nothing for a few months, the a few months of activity, then nothing. From a buyer/seller cost perspective, the are pretty much approaching TCNC auctions

Maybe the sellers should get together and ask for a smaller fee, a few years ago at FUN ebay had a booth at show the reps were quite knowledgeable in this hobby and this part of the market was quite valuable to ebay. 16% ouch !

With a labor fee of $10 per hour (pictures, listing, monitoring, shipping), my COG ended up at around 26% ... served a purpose, for my goal, of selling off my coins that weren't TPG material. |

I moved away from Ebay. Between their fees and the scammers I had to leave. They finally sent me a notice my info is permentantly deleted.
There are many other alternatives to sell items you just have to be creative about ir, go old school. You bebsurprised who want to buy. I'm sure some one here can give you good advice.

E-bay of the past was great. But thank our current Canadian Government for the destruction of E-bay in Canada. They forced them to collect all the taxes and yet putting your funds in your bank account to be tracked. There next tactic is to get all the mattress money when we go cashless. Doing all this for sales on ebay created more possessing fees. Get used to it.
Nothing more that I enjoyed was the Edmonton Coin Show were I delt with dealers one on one. We horse traded, cash traded and had interactions. Deals were done cash with no commissions, no GST, no Provincial Tax, no shipping, no carbon tax on shipping, no tracking of your bank account and you had your stuff in hand.

I've bought 3 lots from different seller in the US, both 3 got lost consecutively by their global shipping program once they entered Canada and since I decided to wait a little to see if the situation would solve by itself, EBay won't assume any responsibility, around $350 of coins, total lost for me. Even if the item is still tracked, be sure to signal you didn't received the item once you have passed the projected delivery date.
Personally I'm mostly done with EBay, I cherry picked quite a few amazing coins there, but the amount of nice deals/coins has been going down drastically since 2019.
Some sellers use EBay mostly for advertising other platform/websites where they can sell their coins for 20-30% cheaper...

I've had it with eBay for a while now. Exorbitant shipping costs just about did it for me. Then the GST/PST addition was the final straw that killed the goose. Especially when it's charged on everything, including .9999 silver.
It's been fun eBay, but 'Hosta la Vista' baby!

I have never had a bad experience buying coins on Ebay, however I would not consider selling there. Too many costs, overhead and risks to the seller.

I sell quite a bit of stuff on eBay. It has costs for sure. But for coins that are worth under $100, there are not great alternatives. For coins over that, the auction houses are a good option.
For esoteric collectibles, eBay is a great option. I have sold a great many of items --some for some real money--where I would never have been able to sell them anywhere else.

Thanks everyone, I think that makes sense on selling lower value stuff on ebay and keeping the better quality graded material for another venue.
All of what I just sold is graded, thankfully Canada Post seemed to have a good discount on shipping to US, ~$12 for tracked package US vs. $18 to send somewhere in Canada, at least we still have registered mail at a reasonable cost.

Yes, fees have been rising just like government taxes too, so what are we to do?
It's still the best place for me to buy and sell, even though it costs more.

I agree with much of the above. Fees have increased and now throw in taxes. But it's still lower fees than other Canadian auctions.

As a buyer only, I've moved away from ebay too. All the raw coins in my interests are garbage, the images are mostly garbage, there's never any true auctions on the coins I want, the certified coins are mostly BIN and way overpriced, and the last Make Offer I did I never got a response and the offer expired. I see the same coins up for months. It's like they don't really want to sell anything. I've gone to GC and HA for everything these days, and factor BP into my max bids.

I still buy coins and other collectibles on eBay but do feel I get ripped off on taxes. I live in the states and my state has a 3.1% tax on coins that are not bullion.
I had a purchase yesterday - 3 - 1/2 oz silver Canadian coins - total purchase $33.03, I was charged $5 for postage and $3.39 for TAX. 10% tax based on purchase price - I think they include the shipping costs and then calculate taxes. This way they add more income. Drives me nuts.
