Hey all,

Random thought popped into my head.....

And the questions are:

How do you plan your purchases?
Are you a saver, or on the spot I want this and I'm getting it?
Is there a limit for a random purchases? For example, would you spend $1000 or under on a random purchase, but for everything over $1000 you save up for?
Is there a price you won't go over?

So here are my answers:

I save up every pay period, usually I find a note/coin I want and then I save up when I have enough I buy it. Several members have let me buy some notes paying every 2 weeks. I generally like that arrangement. My local coin shop has gotten in a selection of pre 1933 gold, so I've been buying 1 paying it off and then picking another. My dealer is ok with it, as I pay cash and every 2 weeks.

I have also been known to save up and just buy it, but for items over $500 that takes me a while.

I will pick up some random lower cost items, that limit has been $250 and I don't do that often. I'll do that when its an item I want with a profit possibility.

My limit for a random purchase has been $250, I would go up to $500, but I would need to ask my wife.

My most expensive purchase has been $1500, I am planning on getting a type set of gold coins and 2 are about about $2500 so I will go up to $2500. On Currency my most expensive has been $800. I will go up to about $2500 for a few notes I want but that will take a long time to save up.

I'm now at the I want rarer items so I have seriously cut back on buying quantity.

What about you?

I don't save for coins, I save for entertainment expenses. Coins for me are in the entertainment/hobby category for disposable income. I don't make random purchases; I'm looking for specific coins. I generally won't go over $500 but I don't have a set limit either. My investments return steady income but my coins do not - they sit in a box doing nothing. I go against the internet mantra about buying the best coin you can afford. I'm a "just to have one" collector so I frequently buy a coin in a lesser grade if it appeals to me at a good price.

1) How do you plan your purchases?
I have set alerts at auction websites such as ebay, GC, HA, for coins I would like add to my collection, because many of the coins I like do NOT regularly come up for sale. I also occasionally browse online coin stores to see what they have in stock.
2) Are you a saver, or on the spot I want this and I'm getting it?
I saved enough money to buy all the coins on my buy list at once, if need be, except gold. I almost never buy on impulse unless I am struck by the exceptional beauty of the coin at say a coin show.
3) Is there a limit for a random purchases?
I don't do random.
4) Is there a price you won't go over?
Unless it is gold, about $500 - $700 would be my limit. But at these values, it needs to be graded.

Interesting discussion. I don't necessarily have a plan, just disciplined behavior interwoven with a gut sense for thresholds. I suppose it helps that I'm not an ultra high-end collector.

I'm at a point in my life that after 50 years of having to worry about all the things related to marriage and raising a family, I don't have anyone but myself to worry about. So I come at it from a different point of view. I'm not rich, just average. I don't buy much, but if I want it I buy it. All of my purchases so far have been under $500. If I find something over that, I'll weigh my options.

I can relate.

Same. $200 has always been my mental barrier. I have gone above it five times, three of which were just above $400. That will not stand forever, since my last three Dansco holes are well above $500.

The general requirement for all my hobbies is that they be self sustaining. If I want to buy a new camera for example, I have to sell items from my photography hobby first. As long as my hobby fund is in the black from my sales, I am good with making a new purchese. I keep spreadsheets for each of my hobbies that shows what I have bought and sold, and what my net loss/gain is. I've used this strategy for years and my wife doesn't have a problem when I spend a lot of money on something.

I am taking this approach with my new coin collecting hobby which I started recently when I inherited my grandmother's coin collection. So far I have only sold some empty Dansco albums. There is some junk silver I know I will sell/trade sometime soon so I can fill some holes in my Type album.

With this strategy, if I get it in my head that I need something for one of my hobbies, I can pretty much get what I want within the space of a few weeks if I can sell something I already have to fund it.

If there is a point in the universe that is furthest away from "planned purchases", that is about where I am.

My typical "plan for purchases" is roughly:
- Take cash out for coin show.
- Go to coin show.
- Buy all the coins I see that I like, until the money runs out or (rarely) there are no more desirable coins left to buy.

So in that sense, all my purchases are "random". I do have a "wantlist" of sorts, but I don't really know why I do that because rarely attempt to pursue or enforce it and don;t actually bring it with me to the coin shows. In terms of price caps, I have a ceiling of AU$1000 (about US$640 at current exchange rates ) for an individual coin. I have gone over that limit precisely once, spending AU$1250 in 2020 for an ancient Lydian half-stater.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

An interesting topic for discussion.
When I was in college and when it was possible to make purchases on ebay (now it is impossible due to sanctions) I usually saved about $100 and then went to the site and looked for what I could afford for this amount. Now only the domestic coin market is open to me and the choice is not so great. I also go to work now and can afford a little more. I save money and if I find something interesting, I take money out of the piggy bank and buy a coin. I think my limit on planned purchases has remained $100-150. If me manage to save more and find a good deal, the limit can be increased. But it all depends on my savings. I spend about $30 on spontaneous purchases.

I am enamored by coins ... always "looking around" and talking about it to whomever will listen. This has led to my collecting style ... "opportunity". Sometimes its a local auction, sometimes it's a call from my jeweler who found something, sometimes it's a request for an appraisal.

My favorite is to find a coin on the ground ... picking it up I say "In God We Trust" ... it rides in my pocket as a comfort :)

I am on year 3 of my quest to complete a US type set, including all the early stuff that is not in a Dansco 7070. And there's the rub, that's the hardest stuff to get. So at first I bought mostly 'lots' and filled the easy stuff with a small baggie of assorted colors and condtions (for example I have 6 Capped Bust half dollars, all raw, ranging from maybe G-XF). That was fun, basically a massive binge, new ebay package every few days.

When I got to the 1790s stuff though (and the early gold), I slowed down, need to get just that right one, and shifted to slabs in fear of the dreaded counterfeits. I have 7 coins remaining, pretty easy to guess the general ones I still need. And when that perfect one comes up for sale I put it on my calendar, get excited as the bid comes up, and generally fall in defeat to someone more voracious. Seems we are all pretty much after the same stuff.

So, yeah - 7 coins left to get and then I'm done, then will surely feel like when the coyote caught the roadrunner, ... "ok now what?"

This is pretty much how it worked for me back in Moscow, though the relative lack of coin shows (that I knew of) meant that I usually went to hobby-themed malls (and/or flea markets) instead... at least there were multiple of those!

(I did occasionally have to save up when I had less than $50 left over in my coin-store-trip funds and it was just silly to go with this little. Fortunately, going to semi-permanent malls rather than sporadic coin shows meant I usually didn't have to care about missing any particular date.
I did also save up for the one big yearly coin show that did happen; but due to Covid and other interference I've only gone there twice, and the first time I missed some big deals due to not realizing they were big, while the second time the coins on offer were much more limited to overly modern and/or overly expensive, so I didn't find much worth buying at all!)

In Israel (so far) I had found neither coin shows nor coin stores, the latter with the exception of antique stores in especially touristy areas that sold coins as well as other antiques.
Reportedly some coin stores do exist but I have yet to find one; in any case it appears that there are none in my current smallish town.

The price I don't want to go over... used to be just $5 for a while, I think! Had to be something really special to go past that.
Then $10, then $20, and I think eventually $50, though in practice it was always less of a firm limit and more of a scale of "the more expensive the coin is the less I'm willing to buy it".

Three years and only seven left! Excellent! It took me 30 years to finish mine.

I guess here I need to define 'type set'. I'm not including the 1792 Half Disme, nor oddballs like the $4 stella, Gobrecht dollar.. I let the draped bust gold stuff represent the 'type' w/out the small eagle, that kind of thing.

As for question 4, "Is there a price you won't go over?", well that's pretty much my 7 remaining slots
