I have been documenting common bad reverses used on CN counterfeit Trade dollars. This "1873-CC" was recently listed on the Bay and removed; the reverse is common to a fake of every date (except proofs) in the series as well as a "1791", and I have nicknamed it the "dotted N" for reasons seen in the following images.       Several common marks, I am curious if anyone has seen this mint mark shape/ size/ location on any dated genuine Trade? I appreciate any help with this! Edited by burfle23

I have not seen the dot above the N on a genuine example, but I have seen the counterfeit with the type 2 neck feathers and other type 1 features on the reverse for over a year on ebay. It appears the counterfeiter has made a change to the die as the neck feathers are closer to a type one on the grey colored example.   |

Closest I could find. Seems to align pretty well with S and D, as well as the spacing above and below.  |

Regardless of the location, the font is completely different, more in the style of an 1878-CC Morgan. I don't think any Trade dollars had that style of mint mark. |

Copying a die is going to distort the MM "style" though, isn't it? Of course they could have just engraved it by hand, but counterfeiters are lazy so I'd guess a real coin was used but who knows. Since these are all Type 1 it has to be from a 1873-1875 coin too, right?

I thought type 1 was 1873 and 74 exclusively, with some type 1's minted 1875 and 76. Thanks for looking kbbpll; I do agree with Zurie no match for font, and I am tired of looking through images  ... |

There is no genuine business date in the series that has a mixture of T1 and T2 on the same side. The only Trade dollar that has a mixture of the T1 and T2 on the same side is a proof 1876 on the obverse. |
