Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone has some tips on beginning a date set (one coin for each year) of UNC Morgan dollars. I've been collecting for a while, so I am familiar with a general collecting approach, especially when it comes to online purchases. Beware of counterfeit, buy the coin not the holder, watch out for cleaned/altered coins, etc. Actually, I guess that advice isn't only for online buys!

Anyway, are there particular issues with strike, luster, availability or anything else I should be aware of for Morgans?I don't know why I am suddenly interested in these. Perhaps it's the availability of a nice, big, shiny silver coin for under $100. I also see I could have a never ending interest if I get into VAMs, too.

In addition to tips from the experts here, I would welcome any book or reference selections that may detail specific year, or mint, considerations. I appreciate it. Thank you

Currently Morgans, especially "CC's" are the most CN counterfeits seen on the internet. I would recommend getting quickly acquainted with genuine VAMs before making purchases unless you are already advanced beyond that.

Agree with "buy the coin, not the holder" as there are many documents out there on counterfeit holders as well...

You could go online and download/screenshot the mintage numbers of the series. Some years are low mintage like 1893, 1895. It will be expensive to get low mintage years in UNC/MS. I put together a date set but over half are circulated. I didn't want to spend the money and time to do an UNC or MS graded set. I bought about 200 circulated Morgans at my local coin store for stacking back when I could get them for around $15-$17 each. I used those to start the date set. Most of my graded ones I bought on ebay. I have have a few 1878 eight tail feathers, a few CC Morgans and a few others graded/designated DMPL deep mirror proof like, PL proof like. Some years have more struck that are proof like.

Morgan dollar collecting is very popular. A lot of collectors go to Vamworld.com to check VAM numbers. It's fun to buy a Morgan and try to ID its VAM. I like clashed Morgans, especially with letter transfer. One book I have is "Elite Clashed Morgan dollars" by Mark Kimpton. I also did a date set of Peace dollars.

Here's my 1893 and 1895. The 1895 is from the El Cortez casino in Vegas.

Yes, there are even obvious fakes all over ebay. Buy it now UNC common dates out of China for $10-$12. How can they get away with this?

Thanks for the information. I appreciate. I do see a couple years in UNC might be pricey.

I built a Morgan dollar date set pre-Covid and before the price jump. I was able to get most in BU condition from a couple online coin stores but not ebay. The 1892-1895 are going to be the most expensive. I picked up nice AU 1892 and 1894 but the '93 and '95 dollars are too expensive for the condition I'd like. The set looks great in my Dansco album.

I have about 3 or 4 reference books on Morgan's, and my go to book has been "The Morgan and Peace dollar" text book by Wayne Miller.

I've found these website to be good resources for VAMs.

I can NEVER come to a conclusion, as to the set I may want to build. Just when I think I may "know" the number and classification, my brain starts to think of VAMS, years, mints, proofs, business strikes etc. etc.

I just end up looking at my coins and moving on ... :)

I'm working on an uncirculated set (with a few high grade AU coins). There are a few that are not cheap, but a lot of the set can be done for $100 a coin in BU.

Here is my set.

There are more pages but they cointain Peace and then IKEs and SBA.
