I get $1 presidential coins all the time to spend so they get put in circulation. The 18 year old girl at the counter said "I'm sorry sir we only accept American money."
I pointed out ave Lincoln and she said "sir, its not American." I asked her to read all the words on the coin out loud and when she said united states of America I said now please let me pay for my mountain dew. She responded with "sir ill let you do it this one time but in the future its needs to be American money."

What?

Maybe they should stop teaching Shakespeare in school and teach common sense instead. Was I so ignorant at that age? I hope not

So far I've had no problem with spreading Presidential dollars around. Knock on wood *hits head*.

Ask the average teenager to fill out a check and see what happens. That generation is probably the most computer literate/technologically literate generation to date, but many don't have much common sense. The fact that most of their transactions will not involve cash, either credit/debit cards, pay pal or the like, also adds to their ignorance of US currency. I've often thought about spending Ikes, half dollars, Susan B. Anthonys etc. but really don't want to deal with the hassle.

That is both funny and sad. This one of an uncountable reasons why more and more people are putting their kids in private schools... They really, quite literally, do not teach anything of any value in public schools anymore.

Last fall I tried spending a Panamanian ΒΌ Balboa at McDonald's. I told the cashier it was one of the ATB Quarters. It was commemorating the U.S. financing and building of the Panama Canal. He said, "oh, cool", and accepted it.

I know somebody who did the same thing with a Canadian Quarter. Told the cashier Canada was now part of the U.S...

It's not just the current youth, their parents are just as stupid. The cashier that took the Balboa was a 30 something...

That's almost pathetic, but then again, maybe the manager of these places should sit down with these new cashiers and tell them what is legal tender.

Isn't Canada part of the U.S.

It will only get worse as the years go by. As a teacher we are required to make everyone proficient in Reading, Math, and Science by the year 2014. Therefor most school systems are teaching to the test since they will be graded on those subjects. Art, Music and common sense will be things of the past since all the emphasis is on the scored subjects.

A teenager probably has fewer opportunities to receive $1 coins, so I put it upon management.
Shafta. If they're handling money, they should be properly trained on what's current.

As a teenager, I apologize on behalf of my generation for any shortcomings.

unforgivable, kefiroth, simply unforgivable. I'm actually in the tail end of your generation so don't feel too bad.

I've got tons of similar stories, so I can corroborate your experience wolverine.

from my experience it's not so much that knowledge is lacking (though it's a problem, of course), rather the bigger problem is that critical thinking skills are almost non-existent now. try and run through a line of formal logic with most kids and they won't even understand.

try and run through the same line of formal logic with an adult who isn't even trained in formal logic and they will understand.
