On a genuine 1909-S VDB, shouldn't the "S" mint mark be further to the left?

So am I wasting my tine having it graded? Do we know for sure it's counterfiet?

Wait for SD's follow-up. But this rookie says back to basics, which means location, location, location. Thanks, Doug.

Quite perplexing. I think we might need better image quality and different lighting on the mint mark. Is there a die chip in the upper left corner of the upper loop in the B in LIBERTY? I've annotated your image highlighting some "markers" I've seen in other Heritage images for position #4 - the dent running NW-SE at the upper right serif, the striations radiating SE from the right round of the S, the blob inside the S, and the faint line running from the tip of the lower serif to the 9. Yours _seems_ to have them, but the S itself looks odd. Looking forward to SsuperDdave's smoking gun.

That S looks fake to me, looks like an added mint mark.

What's that treadlike on his face giving him the appearance of a broken nose and cut face from mouth corner hooking around cheek?

The coin is real, the added "S" mintmark is not.

I think the 'S' is the wrong style. A true 1909 S should have the same style S as the 1909 S Indiand Head Cent. To me this S comes from a later dated LIncoln.
But I am no expert.

Maybe there is some sort of post mint damage that could account for it, but there's no way that mint mark looks correct to me. Also, while it's hard to be sure from the pictures, the B in V.D.B. seems off as well. The crossbar should be noticeably slanted but doesn't appear to be. Might just be the quality of the photo, however.

The vdb is hard to read in general either from wear or whatever. I still feel like its a Philadelphia coin remarked but I think I will send it in to make certain

Have you tried looking at it with a stronger loop, like a 16x?

I agree with Barry. The "B" in V.D.B. should have a heavy slant on the crossbar. I'm not seeing it.

Dave, I love a challenge. Is the "smoking gun" the V is taller than the D and B? and/or the "period" is too close to the D?

This is the easiest way to tell, the MM should look like this: The sheifs don't look to be parallel on the posted coin and the pictures are too blurry/small to see the die chip in the upper loop of the S. Also, the obverse die state looks fresher compared to that of the MM....a red flag.
