Poll Question
What are your thoughts on this 1909-S VDB? The seller states it's all original and grades it at Fine +. The auction ends at 6pm today (05-06-15) I am currently the high bidder, and while I'm not overly concerned about its authenticity, I would feel much better if a few other fellow numistasists checked it out before pushing that many chips in the pot!! I'm not real familiar with the known MM positions, but from what I have read there's only four? Any and all thoughts or opinions on this listing will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I have it as a good show for Position #2, and don't see much reason to doubt authenticity. Having not posted the link, you have to evaluate the seller itself. I understand your reticence there, but with the information here I could find it in three minutes.... With that much time left your bid will not stand. Not knowing where that bid is, I can still reasonably assure you that it will probably increase by at lest 25% during the last five seconds of the auction and you won't get the coin unless you have an overbid in place for the computers too. So make your best stab at grade, true value, and what you're actually willing to pay. Then bid that, and you'll likely get outbid almost instantly. Authenticity questions aside, I can't advise buying one of these on ebay if only because there are so many ready bidders who don't care about what it's worth due to lack of knowledge if nothing else.

Genuine or a very high quality fake. I agree with SD--you are most likely going to have to over-bid to get this coin.

Given how little it costs to have ANACS certify a coin as genuine, I'm honest suspicious of high dollar coins that are not 3rd party certified. Some fakes and cleanings can fool knowledgeable dealers, so when the value gets to the point where it's worth somebody messing with with it, a 3rd party opinion is worth it to me.

Well, don't forget that there's a substantial plurality of collectors - one of them being the guy with the highest postcount in the Forum - who don't do slabs at all. Me, I'm always on the lookout for raw coins because the purchase pressure is relatively limited by those afraid to act in the absence of a slab. You don't have to be the best, just good enough.

Points for mentioning me without using my name. It is true, I do not like slabs. However, I am certain that I will have to buy a slabbed coin eventually. Raw is always by goal, but what remains on my list are the key dates and the percentage of which are slabbed is constantly increasing. I cannot buy them all now, so the evidence says the odds are against me filling all of my final holes with raw coins. This is okay. I still want to be able to buy the coin as if it is raw, judging the coin myself regardless of the label.

This auction is probably over now, I voted questionable on account of the VDB on the reverse for some reason or another, it doesn't look just right.

Thanks for all of the input guys! SsuperDdave's insight was dead on accurate! The coin sold to an on-site bidder for $550 +17% BP = $643.50!!

I was however, able to fill the only other remaining hole in my Lincoln Cent Dansco Album! Although it maxed out my $120 pre-bid, I won this 1914-D!!

There were two other 1909-S VDB's in the same auction! Both sold for less than the one I bid on!? I guess I bid on the wrong one!

the area right around the s on first one you posted is lighter than the surrounding surface.......the s doesn't look fake but that raises an eyebrow for me. I like the one that sold for $525!

I have no problem buying a raw coin, but I am not buying a raw one based on photos. I am just not quite there yet.

I'm 99% sure the $525 is a common chinese fake.
It's really hard to authenticate this with just a couple crappy pictures but I like the look of it based on the given info. The posted coin looks real and EF/AU.
