Two weeks ago I described finding 40 silver half dollars -- including six Walking Liberty half dollars and 18 1964 Kennedy half dollars -- in eight customer-wrapped rolls that I acquired at a bank located in a nearby retirement community. One roll contained 20 silver coins (including the Walking Liberty half dollars)!

This morning I called the same bank and learned that more half dollars recently had been cashed in. When I arrived there the teller told me she had $23 in coins. As she counted them, I recognized the mirror-like surface of proof coins and the luster of silver. She handed me five Proof coins (which clearly never have been in circulation), one tarnished 1964 Kennedy half dollar, and seven 40% silver coins -- including two uncirculated 1970 Kennedy half dollars (a year that I previously never have found). The teller even agreed to call me if someone cashes in more half dollars. Yowza!

I think these coins were from a different collection than the larger cache I found two weeks ago. Most of those Kennedy half dollars were uncirculated, and I didn't find any proof coins. Today I found only two uncirculated silver coins.

That teller must be pretty clueless.

Most tellers aren't interested even when I explain what I am doing (unless they also are coin collectors). It's just a routine job to them.

And what would they do with 40% silver Kennedy half dollars in which most coin shop owners show little interest?

A gift card might be in that teller's future, if you want to keep this amazing ball rolling!

Unfortunately, the manager at that location told me it is against bank policy to give tellers gift cards.

That's too bad about the policy, but understandable.

An interesting idea. I've commented in a few older posts that CRHs don't like to think that some collection dumps they find actually are stolen goods that were cashed in by the thief. Ugh.

Most petty criminals are not very smart. But I think it would be very foolish for an employee who is stealing coins from an elderly resident to cash them at the on-site bank. It makes more sense to leave the site with the stolen coins and then cash them somewhere else where it wouldn't raise suspicions.

Congrats on the amazing find!

This would be because they only made 1970-D halves for mint sets - none were issued for circulation, thus, they're worth quite a bit more than their 1965-1969 counterparts.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!
