Does anyone really care about the Commonwealth Games these days? I suspect any increase in traffic to Woolworths will only be from coin collectors. It would be nice to see something like a series of 10c or 20c pieces featuring maybe geological features like Uluru, Apostles etc released as general circulation in numbers that are limited enough to make it a challenge to get them all via noodling but not impossible. How about Australian fauna, or important women in history?
Maybe the younger generations don't know what happened when Australia Post flooded the market with stamps to fleece collectors? It became too costly to keep collecting everything they pumped out.
Now the Mint are doing the same thing. Any excuse to put another 'coin' out there for collectors (not circulation). If the junk 'coin' didn't have "dollar" on it, would anyone still buy the metal disc with colored paint on it?
Trying to keep a modern collection of every Mint-issued 'coin' is going to be an extremely expensive exercise. Good luck to those who try.
