I love it! Not wanting to step on any toes, but is Peru safe for shipping?

Yep, it's a superb error :) Won't bid in it, as I don't want to go into error collection (it's hard enough with regular issues :D ) Buy with paypal, and you get buyer's protection if there is any issue :) I already bought coins from Peru and had no worries.

I am a bit doubtful about 'mega rare'. I think ALL coins from this obverse die would have been issued.
I do not think that the Mint at the time, would have been all that much worried about what they would have seen as a 'minor' error (at the time).
Such an error is of major importance to us latter day collectors, and a worthy addition to any collection.

It's sad that the coin had been holed ... I don't see it listed in my Calico (it's the old one in PDF, the new one is too heavy to cary at the office :p). Anyway, mega rare on ebay don't often means much :D We will see how high it will go.

This error is listed in Krause... In the "Spain... New World" edition, values given are 100 in VG, $200 in F, $350 in VF (none above that), though it's hard to price something like this.
Seems like all of the Spanish Colonial mints' portrait series feature at least one egregious legend error such as this. Casual observation shows that they seem to be somewhat popular and always draw a few bites at the larger auctions. As an example, the upside down "VII" on the 1813 Potosi 8R (think that that's the date) always seems to draw healthy bidding.
Essentially everyone in the Latin American countries ships via their respective countries' Registered Mail, which routinely costs a good deal less than our incarnation of it. It may take 2-4 weeks, but it gets here - I've never had a problem over the course of building a nice type set of country labels.

I agree that shipments from Peru do not represent a serious problem.
It is an interesting coin that definitely does exist as an original. But like all rare coins this one needs to be viewed with a possibility that it is either a forgery or an altered original. A coin with a hole is always a good target for an alteration because the host starts out cheap. In addition, the fact that someone had the expertise to REPAIR the coin is indicative of the possibility that the same person could have done the re-cutting.
The real coin was punched with ONE too few letters. To make the alteration a forger would have to re-cut all the letters between the C and the S to make the spacing look correct. If you look closely at the ROLU - they are suspicious in their shape AND color.
Be cautious in bidding on this one and make sure there is a solid return policy - Paying with PayPal Charge card would provide the best protection for the buyer.

Excellent insight as always Swamperbob. I looked through my references and could not find one for comparison. Without knowing what a real one looks like, I'll pass.
I did find a Chile 1797 1/2R in Ponterio's auction #136 with "CAOLUS"spelling though.

I actually have a lower-grade example of the Chile 1797 CAOLUS, I believe... I'll dig it out when I get a chance and take a pic.

The final price of $168 is far too steep for me to risk it. I still believe the coin is altered.
I also wonder who won it - private identities bug me. The coin may be on the way to China for duplication as we speak.

swamperbob : didn't noticed it was an anonymous buyer ... you could still try to contact the seller and ask him where country the buyer was ? Or ask him to give your contact to the buyer ...

Here is the ebay coin sandwiched between the only two examples I could dig up online... The ebay piece looks to be a pretty exact match (both obverse and reverse) to the first piece... Interestingly, the obverse of the last piece seems to match those, but it's definitely from a different reverse die.
