The Memorial side is where the split occurred, those rough lines are the natural grain of the metal. An error like that would be very difficult to authenticate without having it in hand, most ebay sellers wouldn't get a second look.
The weight of the coin would figure in on determining the error or PMD. The planchet split, thus it is an planchet error. Having it in hand would show the defect as Bio mentioned.
I have a hard time digesting the fact that error like this split planchet are common and how to detecting it, as I don't usually encounter it in normal circulation.
These are valuable lessons one can't normally get without the residents experts being here. I truly appreciates from all of you willing to share your knowledge.
I found a coin a few weeks ago that looked the exact same with the same year.. Could've been struck the same day! I tossed it out figuring it was PMD. Darn.
