I recently rescued a 1964 JFK half from my late father's coin collection. Unfortunately, he taped (with scotch tape) the coin against some cardboard and put it in an old cigar box. I was able to remove the tape but found some surface damage near a prominent part of the obverse. My question is this: should I have the coin professionally cleaned first or should I just slab as is. It has incredible luster (see comparison) and detail but also some negative details. I would appreciate any advice.

I wouldnt get it slabbed, if thats what you mean. As far as from what other members have said I would say a dip in acetone would be a good idea.

Acetone is just the thing to get rid of any residue left from the tape. It's not worth enough to get slabbed.

The cost of slabbing would be a large percentage of the value of this one. I wouldn't slab it either.

Is this the heavily accented hair variety? Looks like it to me...if so then it might be worth slabbing, correct?

Put it in 100% acetone for 30 min. It will get it all off. Removed some tape from a coin collection that was taped in the 50's. Trust me it will come off and won't hurt the coin in any way.

The tape residue might come off with acetone, but the color will most likely remain as a stain. There are ways of taking the stain off, but it should be done by someone with experience. This process, if done properly, would cost you more than the coin is worth...unless for sentimental value sake. If you are only looking at the value of the coin, it would grade MS64, maybe MS65 after the mark was completely gone, and that wouldn't bring the value of the coin much above melt. There are still a metric ton of uncirculated 1964 half dollars out there, and 90% of them don't have enough value to be worth the cost of a slab.

The accented hair variety only comes on proofs. This is not a proof.
