Is there a resource where I can get a list of every coin that was in circulation in a specific year? I have been picking off a few from the local coin shop and from e-bay in the last month. I have a fair idea of the task in front of me but a list would be nice! Trying to get decent coins (aUnc and above). Anybody else insane enough to attempt this, or have you already done it!

I am attempting the same "Birth Year Set". I have US mint sets, a Canadian PLS, 1 Irish Penny, and 2 UK coins. I have sent emails to a company for Australian coins, and I have 1 Italian coin in route from another CCF member.

I will start a set of 1968 Australian coins, will see what I manage to come up with. Once my post count gets up a bit we could do a trade?

1971 :-) Glad I wasn't born in 1930. The Australian penny would have killed me!

Are you only wanting coins that actually circulated or mint state coins are okay?

I have some American ones already from my travels, plus I have bought a couple on e-bay. Will need to look up my list...
edit : I am after aUnc or greater, failing that, anything with a date ;-)

I just crunched the numbers on my coin database. Apparently, though I have over a hundred coins from my birth year, I have fewer coins from my birth year than I have from the years on either side of it. So apparently, it's not a major collecting theme of mine. As for a program or website that can help you out, no, I'm not aware of one that instantly gives you a list of all the coins that were made in a certain year. You could try the trick I suggested in another recent thread on the subject: go to a world coin database website like this one on NGC and in the general search line, type a letter of the alphabet, and the date. The drop-down list will then give you all the coins issued by countries with "A" in their name, issued in that date. Repeat for each letter of the alphabet and you should eventually obtain an entire list. (You might need to add extra letters for the bottom half of the alphabet to see them all). One thing that might help you is if you can obtain copies of the old Australian Coin Review dating from that period. Back in the 70s, world coins were all the rage, and ACR would publish monthly lists of new coin issues from around the world they were aware of. To get a complete list of coins for 1971, you'd probably want to see copies from mid-1971 to 1973. News travelled slowly back then.

Thanks Sap. That list will be good enough I think. Just a pile of copy and paste and I have it :-) btw :what are you using for a Database. I am currently at the start of developing one.

If any of you is on a mac, I would recommend Bento which is elegant and easy to use (it's not made for coin, but it's easy to make a nice template - or I can share mine).

I use Primasoft PC "Coin Organizer Deluxe". I only picked it because it was the programme that was best able to properly translate the format from the database programme I had used previously, at the time I needed it (back in 2004).

Hi Fuz, I see you have the bug also. I got a Poland 10 in the post today - he looks like a pinochio before the nose lengthens :-) Love it.
