I already have some 1971 coins. Keep looking for 1968 and keep posting. You will be ready to trade in no time.

A few years ago I looked into my excel spreadsheet and figured out how many of my birth year coins I had (1970). I then created a list of all the coins made in 1970, trying to avoid NIFC stuff. The list is huge. There is a LOT of silver too. 1970 seems to be the last year that many countries used any silver. I started keeping my eyes open for new stuff and got quite a few more. I currently have 466 things on my list. I must admit that though I did not intend to get NIFC at all, a few snuck in there. Also, I'm pretty generous in my definition of an item, for example, here is what I have from the US: 1 Cent 1970 D BU In mint packaging 1 Cent 1970 D Unc Approximately 85% off center 1 Cent 1970 S BU In mint packaging 1 Cent 1970 S Prf 1 Cent 1970 BU In mint packaging 5 Cents 1970 D BU In mint packaging 5 Cents 1970 S BU In mint packaging 5 Cents 1970 S Prf 5 Cents 1970 VF- Series 692 10 Cents 1970 D BU In mint packaging 10 Cents 1970 S Prf 10 Cents 1970 BU In mint packaging 25 Cents 1970 D BU In mint packaging 25 Cents 1970 S Prf 25 Cents 1970 BU In mint packaging 50 Cents 1970 D BU In mint packaging 50 Cents 1970 S Prf Coin Set 1970 Unc The Americana Series Mint Set 1970 Unc In mint packaging Proof Set 1970 S Prf In mint packaging
As you can see, it includes both proof and BU versions of the 1970 S coins. It includes sets, both official and unofficial. It even includes the 5 cent military payment certificate. Given all of this, you can guess I got to 466 by being very generous in my definition of 1970.

I've thought about starting but the cost would be prohibitive due to the age of the coins. But then too there were a lot less countries back then.

Jays-Dad, I started a Birth Year Set, with US proof and mint coins, then added UK coins, then just added any world coins from the year 1968 I could find. I have also made a "Visited the Darkside" set of places I have visited. I still need to get one from the Bahamas to get that set current.

that's a cool idea! I've always had a thing for my birth-year in coins, well, US coins anyway... 1976 is an easy year to pick out in the quarter, half and dollar denominations and I like the designs.

1976 US would be a fun year, many have a bicentennial reverse, and you have some in clad or silver. Plus you have regular mint/proof sets, and the special 3 coin sets of the quarter/half/dollar (in clad or silver). Plus if you want to add a little currency, you could pickup the 1976 issue $2 bills.

Ever since I was 13 I have always saved any coin from my birth year or earlier. But I have never had a complete set of US 1955 coins because I simply never saw a 1955 double mint mark that I could afford. My local coin shop has one...(sigh) but it's over $2000 and I just bought a furnace so I am not shopping any time soon.
I never thought about collecting a set from other countries...it's an intriguing idea. I don't think I will actively pursue it but now I will be looking at the coin shows for foreign coins from 1955.

I'm doing this as well, for about a year now, and currently have 81 coins from 41 different countries from my birth year of 1982. I'm also trying to get the best possible quality, without spending too much money, but I'm picking up whatever I can find if the country seems to be a rare one. There are numerous countries that didn't produce anything at all in my year, and personally I will likely switch to bills for these regions and those that are too expensive to include. As for a catalogue, I got a world coin catalogue from the library and am in the process of recording every coin that was produced in that year. Lots of work, yes, but when I'm finished at least I know that it will be comprehensive and accurate, which I cannot say with confidence for any catalogue I have seen online. Oh and it's boring and lacking pics and I've been very strict with grading.. but here is my list : http://lisak890.webs.com/countryshortlist.htm
