Ground find. I see no obvious corrosion surprisingly, just dark. Really nice detail remains. swcoin.ecrater.com

That coin would be AU if you could get rid of the rest of the haze. Something's going on with the third feather from the top. She was probably close to brand new when she hit the ground.

It looks great. It also looks -- to my untrained eye -- like you have an error coin or die variety. Note the third feather from the top -- it seems bent. It should be straight and even in length with the others. I see the outline of a regular length feather behind it. I also see some other odd marks in the feathers...it's a puzzler. I'll be back to see what an expert has to say.

LOL -- so while I was writing my post, upstate solved the puzzle!
Thanks. Good to know.

I'm trying to figure a way to safely remove the rest of the dirt residue without damaging the coin. I have a 1908-S that looks very similar. Any suggestions?

Wow...you lucked out with finding an IHC in that grade! Some of the dirt could be mineralized onto the surface, with lime in the groundwater I'm not sure how you would remove the lime without attacking the metal on the coin...maybe a long soak in distilled water?

I agree that you should leave it like that,I like the way it looks almost like a desert patina.

I think that anything you do to try and clean-up that coin (and believe me, I understand the urge to do so) will devalue the coin. It's worth at least $20 as it is and the way I try to look at it is: the coin is over a hundred years old and it is covered in history.

Thanks for the replies. I have never cleaned coins and that will include this one. I will however do an extended distilled water soak...I have done that before with pretty good results. I don't trust anything else.

I'm going to have to keep my eyes on the ground more. That looks like a striking abnormality of some kind on those top three feathers. It's hard to tell the wear (if any) from the glare, but it does have nice details.

I'll have to get a closeup shot of that feather.

Well, just looked at that 3rd feather. Nothing. It is normal, just obscured by the dark spot or toning in the upper area that obscured it. I did see that it has 4 full diamonds though! In distilled water now for awhile.
