A quick photo of a coin I picked up today at the Portland show--now my oldest Norway coin! I like the wildly repunched 8 in the date. Perhaps Litotes would give an opinion on grade? Thanks! Edited by DVCollector 10/22/2011 10:01 pm

'Good fine, but weak strike in the area of the crown, both obverse and reverse.'
I am fairly sure this is how an auction cataloguer would describe it.

Your 1902 25 Ã-re is from Sweden--nice coin! This coin is too old to be listed in Siegs, so I'm hoping Litotes can give me an idea of value...

Very nice, DVCollector! Congrats on an old Norwegian coin The coin is weakly struck in sections, but that is true for almost all of these. I would say this coin is close to F/VF. Beneath is a picture of a coin sold recently by a Norwegian coin firm as F. Yours is better. What they sold the coin for? Ca. $170 at todays exchange rate. For yours, I would expect something like $200-$225 if put at auction here. An interesting fact - the two crossed hammers to the left of the crown on the reverse is the sign of the Kongsberg mint, which opened in 1686. This is very close to the first coin they ever made there.

Litotes...wow, thanks for all the great info! When I bought it, I suspected this was a very old coin for the Kongsberg mint, but I didn't realize it was only the second year of production! As for the value...I'm amazed--that's great! When the dealer quoted me just $25, I jumped on the chance...because I knew that was a very good deal for such an old coin! Here's a better picture of the coin.

Thanks...when I saw the coin had no problems, and I heard the price...it was an instant sale. Did you notice the centering punch on the obverse? And one at 3, 6, and 9:00.

My word, $25 is a steal for such a coin. Congratulations again! Always nice to make such finds. There were three different types of 2 skilling 1687 made. This is the easiest, in fact, but also the oldest - same design as the 1686 one.

10xloupe, that is not up to date prices. $60 for a VF? You'd be hard pressed to get a VG for that amount - at least hereabouts. Overseas it appears to be possible. VictoryBullion, look here: http://www.myntbok.no/This publication is deliberately free of charge, the author willingly shares his knowledge. You currently get about 5,50 NOK for one USD.

Oh, sorry. Didn't know it wasn't updated. Litotes site looks much much better even though I can't read a word of it (:

Krause is somewhat inaccurate for world coins that have their own collector markets. They're off on Australia prices too Google translate will help with the Norwegian. And for grades, my Siegs catalog translates the grades to: 0 = UNC, 01 = EF, 1+ = VF, 1 = F, 1+ = VG, 2 = G, 3 = Poor
