I was on Sears' site, and stumbled on this. A Kennedy half, struck through with a punch, to make a 3d image. Really? A "truly spectacular collectible coin"...?

Spectacularly horrible, maybe. I bet the reverse looks like a train wreck.

The things people do to coins... at least the colorized ones can be liquidated via a vending machine.

It's a technique called repousse. It was popular about a century ago. Check it out: http://www.popoutcoin.com/

Interesting link, captainwiffo, thanks. The coins on that web site look much better than the one in the above Sears link. That coin is wrecked (however if you look at the bigger pic, it looks somewhat better).

I've seen one of these in a coin shop. The only reason it was out was because it was a curiosity piece.

They look worse in person (at least the Kennedy ones do).

I wonder what the REVERSE side of the coin looks like ?

Until someone can tell me otherwise, I think it is a commercially modified concoction of a standard Half Dollar. Somewhat interesting.

There was a post some time back about all the things done to coins. That one was missed so it's just one more thing people just have to do with coins. I wonder which is worse those or the ones with the stickers on them, painted ones or stamped into something.

Since popouts are created with a mold die, the reverse will have a large negative impression and the coin will end up having almost 1/2" of relief.

Surprisingly, I like the ones on the popout coins website (thanks captainfwiffo for posting that, I learned something new today!)

The one shown in the sears site just looks monstrous. Maybe it's just the pic but I would bet these are cheaply made without the craftsman's touch exhibited by the ones on the popout coin website.

Regardless of what people do to coins I wonder if that is still better than melting them into a pile of metal.
