My mother recently passed away and and I inherited the 1915 Indian Head Eagle coin shown below. Her grandfather gave it to her and instructed her to ensure it stayed a family possession. I remember it vividly from my childhood, and am honored that she passed it on to me.

When my mother received the coin from her grandfather, it had already been made into a pendant; as far as I know the pendant is removable. I rarely saw my mother wear it, and from what I can tell, the scratches on the coin look like they are due to contact with other jewelry in her jewelry box.

Any thoughts on a possible grade for this coin? Anything special about it other than the obvious?

Thank you for any and all assistance.

This coin has high AU detail but its use in jewelry unfortunately reduces it to a bullion piece in terms of collector value. Currently it would sell for about $825, down $100-200 from the value of an unmolested AU. If sold with a gold bezel the total price should of course be higher.

I expect as a legacy from your great-grandfather it is worth far more than bullion to you.

it looks unc to me - tough to tell without looking at it but it's either unc or au (about unc). It's gorgeous. Make sure you wrap it up in a soft cloth, don't rub it and keep it in a safe place. I would not try to take it out of the pendant without having an experienced jeweler do it. And i'd make sure I was standing right there the entire time.
Rest in Peace

Sorry for your loss. You have a lovely keepsake. I hope that if you intend to pass it on to the next generation that you take the time to write out what you remember it from your childhood. Do you know if the coin was already in a pendant when your grandfather got it? Do you know when he got it?

You might be able to find out more about it on a coin history site. But I think that the most special thing about it is that you remember your mother wearing it. So put it on a chain and and put it around your neck and have your picture taken. Keep your written memories with the photo and coin. Maybe you could wear it once in awhile when you find yourself thinking about your mother.

Thank you all so much for your thoughts. This is an important heirloom and I intend to keep it and give it to my children some day.

I would give a million of these away if it brought my mother back, but things are what they are. Thanks again for your thoughts.
