I'm new to all this and would like a few questions answered about the upcoming Torex show. The Torex website is not very helpful, so any insight would be much appreciated.

1. Is it worth it to go if you are a small time collector who mostly collects Canadian/US circulation coins (and never spends more than $5 on a coin)?

2. Aside from the auction, are there booths/retailers there selling coins? Are there good deals to be found?

3. Are there booths/retailers there buying coins? If so, is it ok to bring your own coins to sell? Are the buyers fair?

I'm really interested in going. Thanks in advance.

It is definitely worth it to go, there is not much "lower end" stuff (There is some) but it is always nice to see the really high end stuff for sale their

Yes, there is a bourse floor along with the auction. The bourse is only on Saturday and Sunday. Most dealers are asking book value for all of their stuff that they have for sale, but will always negotiate with you on the price.

Yes, some dealers do buy coins, so it is OK to bring some you may want to sell. I am not sure what they will pay for the coins, because I have never tried to sell coins at the torex, although the prices are probably fair. (If they are not, just find another dealer. Thats an advantage to a big show)

If you really want to go, then you should.

My opinions, to your questions:

#1. No. You will not find much $5 and under. It is a relatively small bourse, with very high table fees for the dealers. This is the coin show that some of the heavy hitters come out for, to buy a few big coins. The best deals are usually in the auction.

#2. I concur with Canadian-Banknotes

#3. Dealers are always buying bullion, and some dealers will buy collections.

It is a decent show to view all the eye-candy on the bourse floor. It is worth the cost of admission. The pub is where you sometimes get to see the really cool stuff, depending who is around...

Hi darryldarryl, too far for me over 300 miles or almost 500 KM on your roads;
besides GM did another engineering headcount cut and got me in this round.
So no job/money to buy coins

It will be interesting to see how the sales on high end Canadian coins ($1,000.00+)will be this week? I always judge the economy and the spending money collectors have by the way high end coins are sold.
I see in this Torex that the prices are starting at below 50% trends, makes me wonder?

Would like to go but too far to go. There are a couple lots that I like, so at 50% trends plus tax and BPs your in at 80% trend before bidding if you are online.

Thanks everyone, I guess I'll still go just to see what 'high end' buyers like...more for curiousity than my interest in expanding my collection. I don't have the $ to justify buying anything over $5.

As for expanding my collection...what are some good suggestions for someone who is trying to fill holes for Canadian & US pennies, nickels & dimes 1890s - 1950s?
I don't really care about grade, just obsessed with finding those missing years.
I'm bored with ebay and have had some pretty negative experiences at Coin Shops...I guess these club meeting may be good?

Hey Ey_pep....

I plan on being there Sat. I am looking to add an interesting penny or two. But if you want common date quarters/dimes at melt or common nickels/small cents for next to nothing, let me know. I am trying to get rid of this stuff.....have way too much. I have extras of all the non key cents, most nickels, dimes and quarters......

yesssssssss! => I just won a 1902 $4 DC-17a VG-10 at the Torex auction => $1,200 (pretty fair price)

Now I have all three of the $4 Minto bills

1900 $4 DC-16
1902 $4 DC-17a
1902 $4 DC-17b

So I can now tick that series off of my OCD list (tick)

Nice, around $1500 with the Buyer's Premium but still well under book value. The 31% (BP and Tax) always keep me away from bidding.
