Ok so I'm looking to upgrade my coin folders to albums. I have decided to go with Dansco, but can't decide whether to go with proofs or no proofs. I currently have no proofs other than 2 nickels and 1 dime that I have found in circulation. What is everyone's thoughts in regards to collecting proofs? Is it worth while going and getting past and current proof, or are most of you satisfied with just business strikes? My thought also it that it was one thing in 1995 when 6 coins were in a proof set, where as now you are dealing with 14. Like I say, I just wanted to see what others are doing.

Thanks

I don't like breaking out proofs because the surfaces are so finicky. Others might have different opinions. Of course, Dansco albums with both Clad and Silver Proofs are the way to go if you trust that you won't mess up your proofs.

I've gone with non-proof albums for the most part. If I'm going to collect proofs, I'm just going to get sets, and keep those intact. The one exception so far is my Eisenhower dollars album. It's such a short series that the circulation issues has too few pages, which feels weird. It's a short enough set that I can easily imagine completing it including all proofs (I can't imagine doing that with, e.g. Jefferson nickels or Lincoln cents). I also can't imagine collecting old proof sets from the 1970s. I do plan on getting silver proof sets every year going forward, and also back to 1999. That's recent enough so it's not a big burden to collect them all, and covers all the design changes and special crap that's gone on since then (state quarters, westward journey nickels, all the Sacagawea and Presidential dollars, 2009 cents, etc.)

I went with no proofs. I have complete 65'-2011' proof sets so I have the coins I just didn't break them out. I did however get a Ike book with proofs so I have broke a few of those like captainfwiffo.

I have hundreds of proof coins but with few exceptions they are in ether the original government holders or in graded holders. I have not felt comfortable with removing them from their protective plastic to insert them into cardboard and sliding sleeves. I would gladly purchase proof albums if they were including the plastic housing for them.

Well I guess it comes down to what you like. The negative about using proofs is that that is a whole other set of coins you have to buy to complete your set. And it starts to get more expensive the later you go so most people just don't like the hassle of buying all those sets and buying both the UNC and Proof sets each year. Good thing is right now most proof sets prices are really depressed so picking up most non-silver proof sets should be cheap and easy.

I like the way proofs look in Dansco folders, particularly lincolns.

Thanks for the info guys. It's really nice to hear what you are doing with the Ikes too, because that was actually what sparked my interest in proofs after seeing smokeriderdon's completed Ike collection. I think I'm going just do the business strikes in albums and any proof sets I get just leave them in the holders from the mint. Thanks again.

With Proofs. Set would feel incomplete without!

I have some proof commemorative coins and proof sets, but don't really collect proof coins in general, so I got Dansco albums without proof spots. (If Whitman had albums without proofs, I would have used them.)

first let me start by saying I am still new to coin collecting.

with that said I agree with ceaton - I too think a set is incomplete without them.i also agree with coinut about the prices of some mint & proof sets....they are so low you can afford to buy 2 - 1 to keep intact & 1 to break open to fill albums.

but,like I said I'm still a rookie so what do I know

How do you even get a proof coin in a Dansco album without damaging it? Even with cotton gloves I would be afraid to touch them. Won't they get hairlines when you push them in?

I've never had an issue. I use latex gloves though.

I go without proofs. I love business strike coins that were meant for circulation. Proofs mean nothing to me so I do not collect them. I also do not like how they look. So I am happy with my business strike danscos. However, for short sets I will get proofs. For example when I start my Eisenhower dollar set, I will get the silver coins and the proofs because it is a short series.

All my danscos are without proofs, except my sacagawea set. I like the looks of the various native american designs in proof form and since they change every year it makes a sharp looking album. I like the look of proof coins in sets overall, but don't really want to shell out the extra money and effort to get proofs for every year for a specific coin set. I would rather spend the money on something else, but there is no question the proofs do look nice.

I did put some proof coins in my type album from sets I had duplicates of when I started the album. I even used modern commemorative proof coins in the 4 holes for commems at that time because I had them already and really didn't see buying 4 different commems when I already had all those just sitting there. I really like the look of Proofs and would love to do a whole album of nothing but proofs but that would be way expensive for the 7070 album for some of the coins so it will not be that album if I ever do. I say do your album any way you wish, if something changes your mind down the road you can always replace them with something else
