What are your thoughts on this 1955 Doubled Die graded by ICG AU55? Do you think the "funky" toning is too distracting? I can post additional pics if needed. BTW - Picked it up for below grey sheet "ask". Thanks, in advance, for your feedback and opinions.

Not sure if it's the pics but it looks like it may have been dipped or cleaned at some point.

I love the 55DD, and I'd love to own one, one day.
I also have some doubts about if the coin's surface is completely original, but I believe it probably is, and have seen similar wheats with similar color. Specifically to the question of it being distracting, no, it looks fine.
I'm not sure if I'd grade it AU-55, there might have been some market grading involved for the key coin. It's still a piece I'd love to have.

I'm still fairly new at this so I have to ask, is there more detail on the coin than what the picture shows? It seems to me that an AU coin still has almot all of the details and the portrait on this coin looks worn.
I don't think the toning is any problem. The important part is that the doubling hasn't worn away. That is very clear on that coin.
If you feel you got a good price --- YEA! Those are hard to come by. I would love to own one myself....someday.

I agree with their grade but that coin has issues. Looks as if someone sneezed on it at one point, causing the spotting.

The coin appears cleaned, no question about it. It would not grade at wither PCGS or NGC, and that's what I would consider when spending that much money on a coin - its potential sale value. I would say it's well below what you paid for it.

Quote: The coin appears cleaned, no question about it. I don't know about that. The coin's color isn't very nice, but wouldn't necessarily convict it of cleaning. Copper can do some strange things depending on the circumstances. I've seen original coins looks somewhat like this. I don't see hairlines and the coin isn't orange or anything like that. I wouldn't be able to guarantee it wasn't cleaned either, but I think it's good. I know ICG grades cleaned coins, but don't they indicate it on their slabs.

Quote: the coin isn't orange or anything like that. Maybe it's just my monitor then, it sure looks orange from here with a rather washed out dull appearance.

If there's anyone here who can eyeball LWC problems, it would be Coppercoins. To me, it almost looks like it sat in a wet gutter for a while, and somebody tried to clean it up. Perhaps that explains the darker areas against the more reflective, almost raw copper areas?

I am going to toss my Two Cents in even though I am so new to coin collecting I just don't have much experience. To me on the obverse the black spotting around 7 o'clock on the shoulder and in the field above the 1955 is from a finger print. Notice the "arcs" and lines the spots line up to make. This to me looks like textbook contact marks from the "whorls" of a finger print. The dark region of the field to the left of Lincoln screams q-tip cleaning to me. Notice the rounded "lobing" at the margins and the left-right streaking pattern. Looks to me like someone started cleaning that region then quit. Then when the q-tip didn't work they tried a solution of some sort in a vain attempt to "improve" the coin. So in order here is what I think happened. Q-tip first, then dipped, then fingerprinted. If I am way out of line here I would appreciate a response as I am trying to learn more every day

unholyroller....that's actually a pretty detailed and plausible theory. I do think it should be considered that we're all looking at a picture. A somewhat respectable (4th place IMO) TPG had this coin in hand and didn't think it was cleaned.

Looks to have an older cleaning, IGC is normally a good grading company. I'm surprized they slabbed it without a designation. Nonetheless, it's still a rare and valuable coin.
