Hey all, Quick question that I think many of the pros will have no trouble answering. How often do you find proof coins in circulation? I came across a 1987S proof cent in a bank roll recently, and thought it was a pretty neat find. Diamond in the rough...

I have found three proof nickels in $2,200 searched. They are out there, you just have to look through a TON of change to find them.

I'm not a pro and I have never found one. But then I have only gone through about a quarter of a ton of change.

I spent a 1987 proof set when I was a kid. I bet there are tons of them out there for one reason or another.

44 boxes of nickels and I have 4 proofs. 36 boxes of cents and I have 1 proof. I think proofs are most commonly found in half dollar searching.

Quote: ive found 2 proofs, an 81 and a 38 A 1938 proof nickel?!? Can you please show a picture? Not accusing you of lying or anything but I have a hard time believing you found a 70+ year old coin with a mintage of less than 20,000 in a roll. Does it have an S mintmark?

i cant get a pic up just yet, but correct me if I'm wrong but all the research I have done shows that all the proof strikes did not have a mintmark for the 1938 year

Looks like a business strike. Quote: correct me if I'm wrong but all the research I have done shows that all the proof strikes did not have a mintmark for the 1938 year That is true, but neither did the Phildelphia business strikes.

its hard for me to believe that this is just a business strike with as good as the detail is on it, but if I'm wrong I'm wrong I'm here to learn!

I have found a couple silver circulated proof quarters in change over the years. They looked different, sounded different and felt different which made me check them quicker.
Since I check ALL my change always I would have found them either way, but they stuck out immediately.
